Obituary of Ilene Annie Ings

INGS: Ilene Annie Ings (née Levins) passed away at her residence, Fairview Personal Care Home, Brandon, on Sunday, February 28, 2010 at the age of 75 years. Ilene was born on June 13, 1934 at Gilbert Plains, Manitoba. She received her education at Country School, Brickburn Elementary School and Brickburn High School, graduating from grade 11. During her younger years, Ilene took part in Sunday School, 4-H, C.G.I.T. activities, skating and curling. She worked in a garment factory run by the C.N.I.B. as well as for canteens run by the blind. She married Lawrence Ings on July 16, 1960 at Gilbert Plains. They lived in Winnipeg for a time before moving to Brandon. Ilene was a wonderful wife and helpmate to Lawrence, as he was totally blind. She sat on the board of the Canadian Council of the Blind and served on the executive for more than 20 years. They ran a rooming house on 12th Street in Brandon for many years. Ilene was a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church serving on the Mission & Outreach Committee for more than 20 years. Although she was visually impaired, she accomplished many things in her life. Ilene and Lawrence celebrated their 25th Wedding Anniversary on July 16, 1985. Lawrence was killed in a car accident on October 31, 1985. Ilene is survived by brother Raymond of Edmonton, AB, sisters-in-law Francis Levins of Grande Prairie, AB, Banna Levins of Spirit River, AB and Yvonne Levins of Alberta. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. She was predeceased by her husband Lawrence (1985), his parents Mabel and Percy Ings, her parents Thomas and Maud Levins, brothers Harold, Melvin, Earl and Leslie Levins, sisters Alma (Joe) Gallant, Jean (George) Ashton, Hazel (Jim) Laraby and sister-in-law Clarabell Levins. Many thanks to her church family for their friendship and support over the years. The family is grateful to the Fairview Home nurses and staff for all their excellent care during the last two years. The Funeral Service was held at the Brockie Donovan Chapel, Brandon, on Monday, March 8, 2010 at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. Dr. Dong Ha Kim of First Presbyterian Church officiating. Pallbearers were: Matthew Gallant, Stephen Gallant, Jonathon Gallant, Scott Birnie, Jeffrey Hockridge and Joshua Hockridge. Interment followed at Rosewood Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Canadian Council of the Blind, Manitoba Division, Lawrence Ings Memorial Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box #2454, Stn. Main, Winnipeg, MB, R3C 4A7 or to a charity of one's choice would be appreciated by the family.
