I was saddened to read of the passing of Dr. William Downe. I did not know Dr. Downe but, as a child, attended Western Mustang football games with my father. Only seven years of age, but I well remember number 52, Bill Downe, as one of the Mustangs who were my childhood heroes. I attended the Yates Cup Championship game at Varsity Stadium in Toronto in 1949 when Bill Downe and Western defeated McGill. I was fortunate to become both a high school teacher and reasonably successful high school football coach. Individuals such as Dr. Downe made a tremendously positive impact on my life, even though I was never fortunate enough to have met him. As I look at the '49 team photo and Dr. Downe, I give silent thanks for him and for his teammate and my good friend, Dr. Bob Farley.
