We express our condolences to the Downe family. Bill was a wonderful, inspiring colleague as a superb Psychiatrist, as well as a great friend during his years in Victoria. His love of life, his compassion for others , his energy, and his enthusiasm will be greatly missed. I know of many in Victoria who had grown to love him ,and remember him fondly.

I was saddened to read of the passing of Dr. William Downe. I did not know Dr. Downe but, as a child, attended Western Mustang football games with my father. Only seven years of age, but I well remember number 52, Bill Downe, as one of the Mustangs who were my childhood heroes. I attended the Yates Cup Championship game at Varsity Stadium in Toronto in 1949 when Bill Downe and Western defeated McGill. I was fortunate to become both a high school teacher and reasonably successful high school football coach. Individuals such as Dr. Downe made a tremendously positive impact on my life, even though I was never fortunate enough to have met him. As I look at the '49 team photo and Dr. Downe, I give silent thanks for him and for his teammate and my good friend, Dr. Bob Farley. As you, his family, mourn his passing, know that his influence was infinite. Thank you, Bill Downe, # 52. Ross Spettigue 'Windsor, ON

I'm sorry to read about Bill's death. His sister Mary Downe of Vancouver is my first cousin with whom I have lost contact since the death of her mother Margaret Downe nee McMurray who was Bill's stepmother having married Bill's dad after the end of the second world war. I would appreciate the family passing this along to Mary and ask her to contact me at my email address or at 519 599 6123.valli

Bill and I first met as patient and doctor but over time a friendship evolved and I found our relationship more a mentoring one as I looked up to Bill and enjoyed his frank out look on life. He was a supporter of my sailing adventures and I enjoyed seeing him at the rec center and having tea together in his condo. My thoughts are with his family and especially young Bill Jr. whom I met and who was often part of our conversations. I have not met you all but I would like you to know Dr. Bill was a great friend of mine and I am sad at his passing but oh so greatfull he was part of my life. Fond Reguards Glenn Wakefield

Bill has been a very dear friend and colleague of mine for over 30 years. We confided many things in each other and - also - had so many good laughs... I am grateful that our relationship got better and stronger as time went on. He was a delightful and important part of my life here in Victoria. I know in my heart we have not "lost" him. He is just a bit ahead of us to go to our final, eternal home. My best regards and wishes to Bill's family and many of his other loved ones. Sincerely, Anneli Driessen, Victoria, BC, V8P2T9 250-472-0909

Dr Bill Downe has been one of my favourite Teachers for many years. I have missed running into him in Victoria -- always exchanging hellos. I think of him often, especially when consulting the invaluable little book he authored (and gave me a copy of) in the 1990s: 'M. Powered Living: On Taking Charge with Confidence'. Dr Downe's lessons for living well are timeless, simple signposts: ask for help when you need it; physical exercise helps the mind; cherish your sense of humour; enjoy your Self. I would not be alive and well today without his coaching sessions, both in person, and in writing. Thank you for your kindness and respectful assistance. Dr Bill. Requiem in pacem. My sincere condolences to family and friends. Monica Turner

Bill Downe was my friend. Many times we discussed such things as the benefits of referenda and freedom of speech. Many times when I was exhausted, he would call me up and we would go for lunch or breakfast. He thought I was perhaps "running out of gas" but after a brief talk and his hearty laugh, my life and confidence was restored. I am so glad for our trips to Sooke in his last year in Victoria, when I could try to repay the kindnesses. My memories of Bill's great soul are cherished. He was an inspiration to many people. His family, he loved and often spoke of, as a great pull back to Ontario. We missed him here, but he died where his roots were. I am so grateful for his presence in my life, and the memories of times and conversations we had together.

Dr. Downe was one of the greatest influences on my life, I still think of him fondly and still practice what he taught me. He was a great man, an exceptional doctor, a truely kind human being. I will miss him the rest of my life and will always appreciate all that he did. I was very very fortunate to have learned all that I did from him. Love and best wishes to the Downe family.
