Mel was a good friend for many years from the early years of 360/30 until the last few years. A span of over forty years. We had many good times and I enjoyed his company. Through the years we managed to keep in touch and our thoughts are with Rhena at this time. Mel will be missed by his many friends. Jim and Pat

I met Mel in hospital, when he was admitted to the MOTU at UH. I had the pleasure of caring for him over the course of 10 days off and on. He was man with a great sense of humor even when he knew things were not going well. He knew laughed and joked with me in the middle of the night. I told him that we were going to be paired together until we"got it right." I'm sorry we couldn't get it right for you Mel. It was a distinct honour care for him. In my many years of nursing, few people make a lasting impression, Mel was one of those few people. When I think of him I will smile and maybe even laugh a little. My thoughts and prayers are with you Rhena, I could tell that you two loved each othe beyond words.

Brenda Hunt (Daughter) posted a condolence
I will always remember my last conversation with my Dad just before he passed. He told me that he would forever be with me. I will cherish those words forever. My Dad was a funny man, he loved to talk and tell jokes and he would talk to anybody who was willing to listen. Even if nobody was listening he would keep on talking. Mom and I would always make fun of him for that. Sad now, cause I would give anything to hear him talk again. My Dad was always good to me growing up, he always told me I was his little girl. He always took the time to play with me and he always let me win at cards. He also took me tobogganing and cross country skiing. He was never afraid to tackle those hills even if it meant getting a ski through the face. I will never forget the stiches he had to get to his face from falling face first down a hill. You’re not really supposed to downhill ski on cross country skis, even thought as a kid I made it look easy. I will always remember all the years we went camping, my Dad taught me how to fish, put a worm on the hook, ew, and I was able to catch my very first fish. I remember how proud he was of that moment and we had to go back to shore to show mom so she could take a picture. I will cherish all those years camping, a lot of good memories and a lot of good times. We spent almost every summer camping all over Ontario. Though our favourite campground was Awenda Provincial park on Georgian Bay. We spent many summers laying on the beach and going swimming and getting overly tanned. Autumn was also our favourite time of year. Every Thanksgiving we would go to Huntsville and camped at Arrowhead Provincial Park and enjoyed the autumn colours. It was a very beautiful time of year. I still remember my parent’s ooing and awing over how beautiful all the trees looked. As a kid I didn’t appreciate it then, but now when I look back I cherish those moments. My Dad was a great fan of steam engines and trains, he loved his trains. He was also a great fan of history and read many history books, he could talk for hours and hours about history. I remember once asking him to help me with a school project for history and falling asleep because he talked so much about it. He also loved his cars, he took a lot of pride in the cars he drove, spending a lot of time washing and waxing and keeping them looking clean. I remember laughing when he told me that he would dust the car off if it had been sitting in the garage for too long. I will miss my dad so much and he will forever be in my heart. I have a lot of good memories to hold on to. He told me to remember those if I was ever feeling sad. I love you Daddy!!

Anita and I would like to express our deepest sympathies to Rhena and family at this sad time. I had the privilege of working with Mel at the IBM King Street office. We shared a service territory for awhile. Mel was always upbeat and chatty. He was chatty because he was well versed in many subjects. I am fortunate to have had him as a friend for over 50 years. Take care Rhena. You are in our prayers. Regards, Bill & Anita Potts

I met Mel when I was !5 years old. He was my friend Brenda's dad and like Brenda said there he was washing his car on the driveway. Actually every time I saw him he was out there washing the car. I have many great memories of Mel and I feel priviledged to have met him. There were many times when Brenda and I drove him up the wall I'm sure, like the time when we missed the last subway and had to call them to come and pick us up - we were drunk. They came and got us and we sat in the back seat and stayed real quiet. My condolences to Rhena, Brenda and all of his family - he was a good man, loved by many.

We had great times together over the span of 30+ years. I still use some of his memorable jokes regularly. I will miss sending CPR train and locomotive pictures via e-mail. Luby & I remember the day last year when we bumped into you in Niagara-on-the-Lake and we had an old fashion gab fest on the main drag. We have many memories to treasure. Look after yourself,Rhena. I just want to express my sympathy to Mrs. Hunt and Brenda I grew up with Brenda on Wellesbourne and my father also worked for IBM so we had that as a bond. Mr. Hunt was always joking and smiling, just a really nice man. He was able to get quite silly with his daughter which I thought was great, they seemed to share the same sense of humour. I know he will be missed.
