TOOGOOD, Dr. John Howard
June 21, 1923 – February 6, 2013
Physician, Allergy and Internal Medicine, FRCP(C). Age eighty-nine, taken after a spirited struggle against the cumulative effects of age. Cherished husband of the late Marion (nee Hincks) (2006). Loving father of Dave Toogood of Erieau, Don Toogood (Josie) of London, Peter Toogood (Jean Van Dusen) and Linda Harris (Ron) of Campbellford and grandfather of four grandchildren. Dear brother of Doris Fielding (Toogood) of Grand Bend and brother-in-law of Joan Toogood of Toronto. Predeceased by his brother Ted Toogood (2011), Toronto Argonaut 1950-1952. Best known as an internationally respected allergy specialist, Dr. Toogood joined London’s medical community in the mid 1950s. Milestones: Toronto’s Runnymede Collegiate, 1940, Canadian Army veteran. Medical Degrees: M.D. University of Toronto, 1946; DIPIM McGill University, 1952, FRCP(C) 1952-53 after Residencies in Montreal and New York City. American Academy of Allergy Asthma and Immunology Distinguished Clinician Award in 1993. With his Victoria Hospital Allergy Clinic team, John researched treatments for conditions including Farmer’s Lung and Inhaled Corticosteroid therapies for asthma. As a member of the UWO Medical Faculty, Dr. Toogood published articles and lectured to physicians on every continent. A great Dad, John was an enthusiastic skier, sailor, and canoeist who shared many adventures with the Toogood Clan on Georgian Bay, Lake Huron, and Lake Temagami. John Toogood helped prolong the length and quality of life of many Southwestern Ontario residents with asthma and allergy conditions. He was devoted to his patients and to the Victoria Hospital Allergy Clinic Staff. His credo was service to humanity. The family wish to thank the following health care workers: Victoria and University Hospital Emergency and Wards; St. Joseph’s Hospital Urology and Geriatric Departments; Glendale Crossing Pond Mills Nursing Home Staff; V.O.N.; McCormick Home Alzheimer’s Outreach Education Program. Visitation will be held on Saturday from 2:00-4:00 and 7:00-9:00 p.m. at the WESTVIEW FUNERAL CHAPEL, 709 Wonderland Road North, London, where the funeral service will be conducted on Sunday, February 10, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. Private interment will be held at Oakland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the London Victorian Order of Nurses, London Salvation Army or Nature Conservancy.
