JoAnn Lunt

Obituary of JoAnn Haugsted Lunt

PORTLAND - On March 28, 2020 JoAnn Haugsted Lunt passed away at her home of natural causes. JoAnn was born June 25, 1946 in San Francisco, CA. When she was 5 years old her Mother, Bruna Bertolucci, married Earling "Bud" Haugsted. Shortly thereafter they moved to Salem, OR where JoAnn started first grade at Garfield Elementary School and later continued her education at Parrish Junior High. In 1960, her Father married Helen Devers, whom JoAnn came to know and love as her Mother. At that time, the family moved across town where JoAnn attended South Salem High School until graduating in 1964. After high school, she attended the University of Oregon. While at U of O, she became a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority. In 1966, JoAnn transferred to Portland State University where she was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Society. Upon graduation from PSU, JoAnn was so moved by the assassination of Robert Kennedy that she became a founding member of the Kennedy Action Corp of Oregon. In 1968, JoAnn went to work for McCann Erickson American Global Advertising Agency. As her skills and expertise grew it became obvious JoAnn's true gift was writing. In 1971 she was recruited by Young & Rohr Advertising where she was a Copywriter for over 30 years. Upon leaving Young & Rohr, she transitioned into retirement by free-lancing as an Advertising Consultant. In 1976, JoAnn married long-time friend and soul mate, Tom Lunt and they were married for over 30 years. They shared a wonderful life together doing what they loved — simple pleasures like gardening, cooking, antiquing, and watching movies. After her retirement, JoAnn focused on her true passion which was animal welfare. She volunteered at the Oregon Humane Society and for the remainder of her life she was both a champion and advocate for the compassionate care and treatment of all animals. JoAnn is survived by her beloved cat Savannah (she has already been adopted into another loving home); her Nephew Jayson Greer and Cousins Karen Hamlin, Vicki Gordon, and Victor Casella. She is also survived by four friends whose friendships have spanned over 60 years — Marilyn Dearsley, Connie Ledbetter, Toni Simpson, and Barbara Walker. Often when lives are shared in this way they become like a family or at the very least a sisterhood. Our memories of JoAnn are loving and rich. She had a style all her own — edgy and fashion forward. Her sardonic humor and quick wit always kept us laughing. She possessed a brilliant intellect and had the ability to engage in lively political discussions convincing us we could solve the problems of the world. We will deeply miss her friendship and the space she filled in our hearts. Donations can be made in memory of JoAnn to the Oregon Humane Society, 1067 NE Columbia Blvd, Portland, OR 97211 or the charity of your choice. Per her request no service will be held.
