Obituary of Shirley Margaret Tucker
Shirley Margaret Tucker
1933 - 2010
Shirley Tucker was born in Dawson Creek, British Columbia on July 31, 1933. She passed away on December 30, 2010 at Rotary Manor Care Home.
Shirley was the eldest child of Gerald and Maggie Querin. She grew up in Rolla, where she attended school and graduated from South Peace Secondary School in Dawson Creek.
After graduating she was employed by the Lake View Credit Union. She was a secretary at South Peace Secondary School and later employed at Northern Lights College.
In 1953 Shirley married Frank Tucker. They had three children Shirley-Anne, Matt, and Jerry. One of life’s greatest challenges for Shirley and Frank was losing their son Jerry.
Family values were always important to the Querin families and Shirley carried those values with her throughout her life. Her family was everything to her. Her four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren held a special place in her heart.
She loved to entertain and will be remembered for her dinners, coffee parties, popcorn and hot chocolate parties with the grandchildren. Friends were also very important to Shirley and were often included in her entertaining.
Shirley was an accomplished piano player and often played for her friends and family. She spent several years bowling and won many trophies for her efforts. One accomplishment she was especially proud of was the poetry she wrote. There were even a couple of poems she had published, Shirley loved to garden and grow flowers. For years she enlisted her grandchildren’s help entering her flowers at fairs.
She always enjoyed traveling. Her and Frank took a few trips to Las Vegas but most of their traveling was in their holiday trailer locally and in southern Alberta and British Columbia.
In 2002 after 48 years of marriage, Shirley lost Frank. Soon after, she experienced a decline in her health and moved to Pouce Coupe Care Home and eventually Rotary Manor. While residing there Shirley enjoyed the music, grand buddy days, and visits from family and friends. When she felt well enough she also enjoyed the outings, picnics, and gardening. She was President of the Residents Council. She was reacquainted with many old friends, made many new friends with both residents and staff.
She will always be remembered for her love of music, her love of words, sense of humor, strength and her dedication to her family. Her family and friends will sadly miss her strength and courage.
Shirley was predeceased by her husband Frank Tucker, son Jerry Tucker, her parents Gerald and Maggie Querin, and her brother Gerald Querin Jr.
Left to mourn her loss is her daughter Shirley-Anne (Neil Johnston) Bell, her son Matt (Ann) Tucker, her grandchildren Michael (Tanya) Bell, Trisha (Trevor Haney) Bell, Katherine Tucker, Amanda Tucker, her great grandchildren Mattea Bell, Owen Bell, sister Marie Webb, brothers John (Barb) Querin, Joe Querin, and Harold Querin, as well as many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held on January 7, 2011 at the Bergeron Funeral Chapel, Dawson Creek, British Columbia with Reverend Marilyn Carroll officiating. Interment took place in the Brookside Cemetery.
