Obituary of Archie Jones

Archie Jones, Jr. was born August 18, 1931 in Lincoln, Nebraska to Archie Jones, Sr. and Edna Belle (Laird) Jones. He was an only child. In the early 1940’s, his family traveled from Nebraska to Colorado and southern California before settling first in Roseburg and finally in Eugene in 1945.Archie attended Wilson Junior High and Eugene High, graduating with the class of 1951. He joined the Navy and returned home on leave after boot camp to marry Helen Glee Kuntz on September 19, 1951. He was stationed in Yokosuka, Japan for 18 months where he worked as a store keeper. He was then stationed in Alameda, California where he was joined by Helen for the remainder of his time in the service. He was discharged June 6, 1955.Helen and Archie welcomed their first child, David, on March 1, 1956. Valerie was born October 8, 1957. Melinda (Mindy) was born March 8, 1969.Archie worked for Sacred Heart Hospital in the purchasing department. He co-owned a bar called the Spigot and a Shaw's of San Francisco ice cream & candy store franchise. He loved his work in surgical supply sales where he got to know many customers in Eugene-Springfield, Bend, and on the central Oregon coast. He retired from Durr Medical in 1995.He always loved to have projects. He built whirligigs, made cement turtle stepping stones, suns, papier mache crafts, frames, and lots of other woodworking projects. He loved family beach trips to the Oregon Coast and flying kites. He loved Oregon football. He loved office supplies.He was a founding member of the River Road Yacht and Polo Club. He had many dear friends he treasured.When Helen passed away September 2, 2012 he was heartbroken.In recent years, Donna Bolan has been a dear special friend and brought joy back to his days.He passed away September 21, 2016 in Eugene at age 85. He is survived by his children and their spouses, David and Janette Jones; Valerie and Jimmy Stewart; Melinda and Will Handy, all of Eugene. He is also survived by his grandchildren Ryan Jones of Eugene; Philip and Ashley Jones of Aloha, OR; Marissa Jones of Portland, OR; Grant Stewart and Eric Stewart both of Atlanta, GA.He was greatly loved.
