John McManusA celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 20, at Musgrove Family Mortuary in Eugene for John C. McManus of Eugene, who died Nov. 12 of Alzheimer’s disease. He was 89.He was born Sept. 24, 1921, in La Grande to Elmer and Gladys Black McManus. He and his wife, Beth, were married July 1, 1944, in Milwaukee, Wis.He graduated from La Grande High School. He earned a bachelor’s degree in music education from Northwestern University in 1943 and a master of arts from Columbia University. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a B-24 bomber pilot based in Italy during World War II. He worked as a music teacher in Chelan, Wash., Klamath Falls, McMinnville and at the University of Oregon.Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Ann Larson of Banks and Kathy McManus of Lakewood, Wash.; a son, Edward of Eugene; a sister, Patricia Brand of San Jose, Calif.; a brother, Richard of Spanish Fork, Utah; and four grandchildren.Remembrances to the University of Oregon School of Music Scholarship Fund.
