Obituary of Edward Walter Drost
DROST: Edward Walter Drost (January 18, 1921 - April 12, 2012). Edward passed away at the age of 91 at Fairview Personal Care Home.
He will be deeply missed by Virginia, his wife of 63 years, his son Robert (Teresa), daughters Lorna (Larry), Karen (Allan), Debra (Richard), Darlene (Les), Edwardine (Mike), grandchildren, Jeffrey, Mathew, David, Jenna, Justin, Christopher (Janet), Aaron (Amanda), Kelsey, Stephanie and Olivia and great grandson Brayden.
Ed was predeceased by his parents Michael and Sophie, siblings Walter, Charlie, Stella and Bernice and son Richard. He is survived by his brother John and sister Emily.
Ed was born in Brandon and grew up in Brandon's North end. Ed enlisted in the Canadian army then volunteered for the 1st Special Service Force (Devils Brigade) during World War II. He was employed with Canada Grocers for many years during which time he took an interest in beekeeping as a hobby. This hobby became a full time business until his formal retirement. Ed had an incredible work ethic that he passed onto his children and grandchildren.
In his retirement years, he enjoyed gardening and spending time cultivating his fruit trees, vegetables and tending to his flower gardens on the farm and at the family home. He also enjoyed trips to the United States visiting family and friends and spending precious time with his wife, children, grandchildren and family pets, Casey and Ginger.
Edward was a man of strong faith. He was an honorary life member of the Knights of Columbus and he belonged to the Royal Canadian Legion. Dad was a warm hearted, generous man, had a great sense of humour and a love of sports, especially hockey and boxing.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the nurses and staff of Fairview Personal Care Home for their support and care during the last two years.
Viewing and prayers will be held at the Brockie Donovan Chapel, 332-8th Street, Brandon, Manitoba on Thursday, April 19th, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Augustine's Roman Catholic Church, 327-4th Street on Friday, April 20th, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. with Fr. Dominic Yuen as Celebrant. Interment will follow at Brandon Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider a memorial donation on Edward's behalf to the Canadian Diabetes Association, 727B-10th Street, Brandon, MB, R7A 4G7, Fairview Personal Care Home, 1351-13th Street, Brandon, MB, R7A 4S6 or a charity of your choice.
