Obituary of William Kenneth "Ken" Gill

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Kenneth on September 10, 2011. Born in Brandon on November 4, 1923, he received his education in the Brandon School System. Ken was a member of the Brandon Boys' Pipe Band and later joined the 26th Field Regiment Pipe Band. He joined the Canadian Artillery in November 1941 and was discharged in 1942 for medical qualifications. Ken became a Commercial Traveller for over forty years, selling Frigidaire appliances for Ashdowns. He also sold Speed Queen appliances, Toshiba televisions and sound equipment. He was a member of the North West Commercial Travellers' Association and this year was presented with his 65 years membership pin from the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #3. Ken took early retirement. One of his favorite past-times was watching hockey, baseball and curling on T.V. He spent many happy hours cheering on his favorite teams. He was predeceased by his parents, Neta and William, also brother, Clifford and his wife, Darline, and sister, Eileen and her husband, Peter Bucklaschuk. Ken is survived by his wife, E. Fern (Jones) Gill (married October 20, 1948), daughter, Tanis Stapleton and son, Greg (Carolyn) Gill. Also surviving are grandsons, Brent (Tobie) Stapleton and great-granddaughters, McCartney and Jade, Broken Arrow, Oklahoma and Scott Stapleton (Jodie) and great-grandsons, Callum and Brendan; step-granddaughters, Cindy (Greg) Turner (step-great-grandsons Grayson and Logan) and Leanne Jenkins (step-great-granddaughters Grace and Madeline). Ken is also survived by Keith and Doreen Blight, Audrey Moore, Harvey and Carole Jackson, and numerous nieces and nephews. A graveside service was held at Brandon Cemetery on Thursday, September 15, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. David Cathcart, Knox United Church officiating. Ken's beloved grandsons, Brent and Scott Stapleton, served as urn bearers. A time of remembrance followed at the George Brockie Fellowship Centre. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in Ken's memory, to Brandon Regional Health Centre "Palliative Care", 150 McTavish Avenue East, Brandon, MB, R7A 2B3.
