I was saddened to read of your Dad's death. I only met him once but communicated with him several times by mail. I am a twice removed cousin of Fred's. My Grandmother, Mary Baxter nee Gallagher, was sister to Charlotte and Annie Gallagher. I cannot remember which was Fred's Mother. Fred's Uncle, and namesake was Dr. Fred McGuinness of Winnipeg and a cousin of my Mother, Clara Hill nee Baxter. I did some of my nursing training in Brandon and had the pleasure of dinner at the McGuinness home a few times. I also am proud to own several books about Manitoba written by Fred. I do sympathize with your loss as fathers are an incredible influence on our lives and those of grandchildren. I would dearly love to hear from anyone of you and make some historical family connection. I am in Vancouver and our son lives near Duncan.
My thoughts are with all of you.

Colleen, Fred Jr., Gallagher, Tim and Families:
I was so saddened to hear of your Dad's passing. He was such a special person. The seven years that I had the opportunity to work with him have always stood out for me as the best times of my life.
Your Dad was the perpetual developer of people - he was always learning and always encouraged those around him to learn as well. I think that is what kept him so young.
I have so many fond memories of those years but also the stories that your Dad shared with me.
One of the things your Dad always did was to keep me informed o where he was going when he left the office so that I could reach him. I remember one day (remember this was before cell phones) he had the Minister of Agriculture from the Saskatchewan government flying into meet with him. He distinctly told me that he would not be available for three hours and there was no way I would be able to contact him. Well wouldn't you know it an emergency came up and I had to try and find him. So I tried to figure out where he might be. I made a call to the airport and asked them if he might be there and could they page him? They told me they didn't have that capability. Well about 10 minutes passed when all of a sudden I got a call from your Dad. He sounded rather confused (not something that was normal) and in his words: "Elizabeth - did you call me?" I proceeded to tell him the message - not thinking anything of it. When he returned to the office he looked at me and said - "do you know how you reached me?" to which I replied - "well I called the airport". It seems that I called the air traffic control tower. Your Dad was standing on the tarmac watching the minister and his pilot take off. As the plane proceeded to take off - all of a sudden it circled. Thinking there might be something wrong your Dad stood there . . . the plane landed and the pilot opened the window and yelled: "Call your secretary!" and then took off again.
I have to tell you your father was most impressed and I earned my captain's stripes that day. We had a number of laughs over that incident.
I feel so honored to have known your Dad and so appreciative of the opportunity to work with him.
My deepest sympathy to all of you - I know how much he will be missed - not only by your families but by the community at large. He made an impact on everyone he ever me. That is a true testament to the man he was.

Although I had learned that he was in failing health I was stunned to learn that Fred had lost his battle.
I consider myself lucky to have shared some of the best years of his storied life. Working alongside of him was an inspiration. I was always impressed the way he "built" a feature story for Readers Digest and other publications with his use of recipe cards to take notes about a subject over time before writing the story.
I was looking forward tro seeing him when I returned to Brandon in August. But like others I will have to be content with many fond memories of this wonderful man. To the family, my most sincere condolences for your loss.

My sympathies to you all. Your Dad was a great guy - a friend to my dad and then and me through our weekly newspaper at Cartwright. In fact, he reminded me of my own dad - so interested in everything and everyone. What a wealth of stories he had from his own life, and those he gathered. He is missed. - Vicki at Cartwright

Gallagher and Tim,
My sincere condolences on your father's passing. My dad grew up in Brandon and went to school with your Aunt Orma, and I spent a year in Brandon when I was in grade 12 with Gallagher. I met your dad only once or twice, but I remember feeling very welcome in your family. My thoughts are with both of you.

My sincerest condolences to the McGuinness family. I only met this remarkable man in the last few years and had many good trips with him, as well as lunches. My years as a telegrapher with the CPR gave us lots to talk about. Samuel B. Morse would be proud of 'Fred' as he tried his best to preserve the railway 'morse' code. Also there isn't a waitress in Brandon that doesn't know that Mr McGuinness would have soup, a club sandwich and they always asked, " and your tea and muffin later?" I will never forget this man.
