Obituary of Kathleen Isabella Shoemaker
SHOEMAKER: On March 19, 2011 Kathleen Isabella Shoemaker at age 88 died peacefully, at Fairview Personal Care Home. Kathleen (Kay) was born in Wellwood, MB on August 10, 1922. She was the eldest daughter of David and Ann Smith, both originally from Scotland. Kay attended school in Sidney, from grade one to eleven. She then went on to Carberry to complete grade twelve, continuing her education in business college in Winnipeg, and Gimli for teacher training. Kay taught school in Firdale, Woodnorth, Vogar, Virden and then in Brandon. She married George Shoemaker of Woodnorth, MB. Their son, Ron was born in Portage la Prairie and the family lived in Sidney, Winnipeg, Virden and then in Brandon, where George was Branch Manager for Sun Life of Canada. Kay enjoyed playing the organ and entertained at many functions and family gatherings. While living at Victoria Landing in Brandon, Kay and friend Jim Corey kept the sing songs a happy and lively event. In her earlier day, she enjoyed playing in a band for dances, curling, golfing, playing bridge and singing in the church choir. George and Kay loved to travel and had many wonderful adventures. Her family and friends were very important to her and she shared many stories about the special fellowship shared at the First Presbyterian Church. Kay was predeceased by her husband, George on August 20, 1991, after 46 years of marriage. She is survived by her son, Ron (Elaine); grandchildren Lori (Alan), Mark (Esther); great- grandchildren Carter, Ella and Aleah; her sister Helen McLean; her nieces and nephew; Gwen (Don) Dempster, their children Drew and Bryce; Morris McLean and Shirley (Kelly) Mitchell. She touched the lives of many and will be remembered with love. The family wishes to acknowledge the professional and caring attention of the staff of Fairview Personal Care Home. A Memorial service will take place at the First Presbyterian Church, 339-12th Street, on Saturday, March 26, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. with The Rev. Dr. Dong-Ha Kim officiating. In keeping with Kay's wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family interment will take place at a later date. All those in attendance will be considered as honorary pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make a donation to the Alzheimer's Association, 4B-457-9th Street, Brandon, MB R7A 1K2 or to a charity of their choice in her memory.
