Karl KordeschThe funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, at Musgrove Family Mortuary in Eugene for Karl V. Kordesch of Eugene, who died Jan. 12 of leukemia. He was 88.He was born March 18, 1922, in Vienna to Victor and Katherina Maier Kordesch. He married Erna Bohm in 1946 in Vienna.He held a Ph.D. from the University of Vienna. He was the inventor of the alkaline battery and worked as a research chemist for Union Carbide. In 1970, he built a fuel cell battery hybrid electric car. In 1977, he became the director of the Institute for Inorganic Technology at the Graz University of Technology. He held 60 patents in batteries and electro-chemical systems.Survivors include his wife; two sons, Albert of Santa Cruz, Calif., and Martin of The Plains, Ohio; two daughters, Catherine Kordesch of Eugene and Joanna Paterson of Ardfern, Scotland; and seven grandchildren.Burial will be at Masonic Cemetery in Eugene.
