Ksiazek: Genowefa "Genny" (nee Chojnacka) passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 16, 2011 at Fairview Home, Brandon, MB. Genny was born February 4, 1920 near Wlodzimierz, Poland. Genny was the youngest of nine children (seven boys; two girls) of Bronislaw and Magdalena Chojnacki. Genny grew up and worked on the family farm up until WWII. During that time, Genny married her first husband Michal Zambrzycki around 1938, unfortunately he died within two years of a fatal illness. During WWII, Genny and her sister, Adela, were detained and kept in a German Labor Camp, where they were forced to do menial labor. When the war ended and the laborers where released, Adela was given the opportunity to go to Canada; where as Genny met and married a fellow Polish camp laborer Aleksander Ksiazek and returned to Poland to run their own farm and start a family. They had three children; Amelia, Michael and Joseph. However, in 1959 with the sponsorship of Genny's sister Adela, the family moved to Brandon, MB. For the next 20 plus years, Genny stayed busy raising her children and working at various places as a housekeeper until her retirement from Eaton's Department Store. In 1977, Genny traveled back to Poland for an extended visit with family and friends that she had kept in touch with. As an active person, she was always busy in her garden in the summer and she enjoyed knitting, puzzles and photography throughout the year, as well of course frequent visits from friends and family. Genny was well known for her cooking, especially her homemade perogies and borscht. As a devoted Catholic, she rarely missed a mass at St. Hedwig's Roman Catholic Church.
