Not long ago, I came across the obituary for Mervin on his death five years ago. I was his grade 8 teacher in Minnedosa in 1952-1953. He sat at the front of the room near my desk. I remember him as a well-behaved student. He was one of two boys whom I taught how to show a film on a projector. I never saw Mervin after that year. It is always sad for me to learn of the death of one of my former students. I was pleased to read how he was successful in his life's work. His family will carry fond memories of Mervin.

Dear Gloria, Marci, Vince, Rhonda, Craig, Allan, Darlene and family,
We have so manywonderful memories of Merv. You never knew what he might say or do when you met him, so you always had to be on your toes and ready for his antics. He was so good to both of my parents and to all of my family as well. He always had a story or giggle to share and never was too busy to stop and chat, even if just for a minute. He really did make this crazy old world a better place by just being in it. He will be missed and remembered fondly by so many. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you.
God Bless.

Dear Gloria and Family.
I was so very saddened when Don showed me Merv's obit on the computer. How fondly I remember the happy times we had when he and I worked together at the Solo Store on 6th St in Brandon. It was always such fun to go to work. What a rich life Merv went on to enjoy after that. He will be sadly missed by so many people.
My association with you and your family goes back many years. When I was very young I always thought the BA sign on your Dad's service station stood for Bob Arbuthnott. Your Mom was my Grade 6 teacher in McConnell School. Later, when you moved to Brandon, you often babysat our two sons who thought you were the best. Our past is rich with great memories and we must treasure them always as we now go forward.
Love from Bobbie(Roberta Watt) and Don Purdey.

I was sorry to read in the Sault Ste. Marie Sault Star of Merv's passing. I remember babysitting for Marci & Rhonda while I was in highschool and helping you complete reports for Welcome Wagon while you were teaching school. I fondly remember Merv and Safeway sponsoring me for some charitable marathon walk, but only on the condition that I wear a placard announcing me as "Safeway's Walking Pork Chop". I made it the whole 26 pluc miles !!.
It sounds like you guys lived an interesting life and saw much of Canada in your transfers. I married after college and we too moved a fair bit, living in Barrie, Kenora (3 times), Thunder Bay and Sioux Lookout. We have been "back home" in Sault Ste. Marie for over 23 years and our daughter and son are grown and gone.
I hope this condolence finds you in good health and coping with your loss. I trust your children and grandchildren are a source of great pride and comfort to you.

I just read Merv's obituary in the paper and I wanted to send along my condolences. I worked at CTC 333 back in the late 80's and Merv was a great person to work for and with. He would roll up his sleeves and give you a hand with whatever you were doing. Many times I had to threathen him with "I'll tell the Missus you're down here unloading trailers again." He would laugh, flick his jacket over his shoulder and go on his way. He will be in my memories as a good person.

Dear Mrs.D, Rhonda, Marci, Allen and to all of your families and extended family,
I am so sorry for your sudden loss. Mr.D was a terrific person and I can only imagine how he will be missed.
Rhonda, I have many memories of your Dad while we were growing up as I spent much of my time either at your house or working at C.T. Everytime I saw your Dad the greeting was, "Well Hello Blondie" with a big smile on his face, and sometimes it was twice a day if I had been at your house AND at work! (He was certainly at both everyday!) I cannot remember a time when he didn't have that laughing smile on during his 'Blondie Hello's', (Or maybe I was just lucky and wasn't around when you got into trouble). When I think of your Dad, I see him with a large smile and that teasing twinkle in his eye. As everyone well knows, Mr.D was always a great family man, and I am sure the old Mount Pearl gang and more would agree that Mr.D was also wonderful to all of your friends. I for one will miss the teasing.
My deepest condolences to you all,
Tracy.

Gloria and family, we are thinking of you during this sad time. As a teenage boy, I remember Merv and another employee of the Burgess Solo Store boarding at our house (next to Wellman's Drug Store) when they first arrived in Brandon to work for Ken. There was good conversation and laughter around the dinner table. Little did I know that we were probably eating some of the best cuts of meat a frugal dollar could buy at the time. I remember his hands. They were hard working hands. They showed a passion for what he did behind that meat counter each day. While visiting Brandon a couple of years before Merv retired, I went to the Customer Service Desk of the Canadian Tire Store, gave my name and asked if Merv was in. Within minutes, I was invited to his office. After all those years, it was as if we had not skipped a beat. From the West Coast, we send our condolences.

When I first saw Mr D I knew I was seeing a force in Nature. He was and always will be bigger than life in my eyes and the best boss in so many many ways. Tons of great great stories. He left us so early.
My thoughts and Prayers to Mrs D and family. Its gonna be tough time for awhile guys. Hang in there the hurt gets less painless in time. Thats why God gives us memories in my opinion because the good ones always win out.

Dear Gloria and extended Family. We were truly sorry to hear of Merv's passing. I so much enjoyed Merv's company, wether on the golf course or off he was a real treat to be around. Every time we were on the 17th Tee at the lake I would goad Merv into taking off on his banter about... "which holes the mouse going go in .. this time? which was a take off on one Aggie Busch at the Brandon Fair where he ran the roulette wheel with colors where mice he would release would disappear. Well "Swervin Mervin" could do the banter better than Aggie.. and we'd all crack up.
We'll miss you very much Merv.
Love

Please accept my sincere sympathy. I had the pleasure of meeting you and some of your family at my nephew and niece's wedding (Robert and Andrea Elves) in June 2006 in Victoria, BC.
Unfortunately, I don't know you personally but do know how special your husband and your family are to Robert and the whole Elves' family.
Karen was so upset when she was telling me about Merv's passing and how much he'll be missed, not only by his family but his church family, friends and the whole city of Brandon.
It will be one year since my Mom (Arley-Bly Wiley) died on January 29, 2010 and we are still grieving. This will be a very difficult time for your whole family but please know that others share in your sadness. I have heard your names mentioned so many times over the years that I feel like I personally know you.
God Bless you all. Take care, Arlene

I just heard about Merv's passing. Gloria, and family our thoughts and prayers are with you all. I will always remember the times working at CT. Merv (and family) showed so much support to the military and to CFB Shilo. I always remember the time when we had VIPs come to the store and Merv introduced me to them. He also talked about Shawn, and said that he was a Captain in the military serving over in Bosnia.....he seemed to be very proud of Shawn. I feel very fortunate to work for such a great man who care for his community and putting the community first! Merv will be missed by many people including us.

Very sorry to hear of the passing of Merv. Years ago Merv mentored me on the skills of merchandising (he was a master of this) and provided much insight and valuable advice regarding the operation of a successful retail operation - we still use those tips and ideas today in the day to day operation of what is now a very successful and prosperous business. Merv always took the time to visit everytime I ran into him in Brandon - I am sure that this story is not that unique as Merv genuinely enjoyed sharing his knowledge and expertise to inspire success for others. My sincere condolences to the family.
