Obituary of Daniel "Dan" James Storen
STOREN: Daniel (Dan) James Storen of Brandon, beloved husband of Myra Storen, passed away at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Monday, February 22, 2010 at the age of 77 years. Dan was born on August 21st, 1932 in Mair, Saskatchewan. At one year of age, Dan moved to Brandon with his parents Anne and Jim Storen. His brother, Bill, was born one year later. Dan lived at the corner of College Avenue and Fifth Street where he developed friendships that would last a lifetime. His elementary years were spent at David Livingston and McLaren Schools and he went to high school at Brandon Collegiate. He moved to Winnipeg after high school and spent two years at the University of Manitoba studying Engineering. Dan apprenticed as a Machinist with the CN Railway and then worked at the CN Railway Station in Rivers, Manitoba. In 1960, he accepted a position as a Machinist at Manitoba Hydro in Brandon where he worked until 1967 (and met his wife Myra). In 1967, he became the Machine Shop Instructor at Assiniboine Community College where he worked until 1993 when he retired. Dan was involved with the Masonic Lodge and The Shriners where he was member of the Pipe Band. As Armourer General for the 26th Field Regiment, he made scale model canons for the Canadian Forces and through word of mouth his canons became sought after throughout the world. Dan loved the outdoors; hunting was a passion along with fishing trips up North with his buddies or to the West Coast of Canada. He taught winemaking at ACC for a year and continued to make his own wine throughout his life. In his youth, he was a member of the Brandon Sportscar Club and owned an MG which he remembered dearly. Dan loved to build things, from motorized mini-bikes and trikes for his children to fishing boats to his cottage at Oak Lake. In his backyard shop he put his machinist skills to work; whether it was helping out friends with different projects or other special jobs for businesses around Brandon. In his retirement, Dan loved to travel with his wife Myra. Two of his favourite trips were to Australia and Hawaii. Every winter for the last seven years, Dan and Myra would drive down south for the winter. They spent many months in Texas, Arizona and California with friends and family. Dan is survived by his wife Myra, son Ken (Kathy), son Mark (Sandi) and daughter Jackie, grandchildren Katelyn, Devin, Nicole and David, brother Bill (Clara), Aunt Alice and cousin Phyllis. He was predeceased by parents James and Anne Storen, Uncle and Aunt Barney and Edna Evanonki. A memorial service will be held at the Brockie Donovan Chapel, 332-8th Street, on Saturday, February 27, 2010 at 3:00 p.m. with Rev. Shannon McCarthy of Central United Church officiating. Memorial donations may be made to Canadian Cancer Society, 415-1st Street, Brandon, MB, R7A 2W8 or to a charity of your choice.
