Obituary of Helen May Biggerstaff
BIGGERSTAFF: Helen Biggerstaff of Brandon, May 9, 1913 – January 31, 2010. Helen lived in Brandon all her life. She worked for Lindenberg's and gardening was a summer pastime for her. Her garden was weedless – I don't think a weed dared show its head in her garden. The same went for bugs, especially potato bugs. She loved flowers and pansies were her favorite. She very much enjoyed the two plants of pansies on her balcony at Victoria Landing last summer. Helen's main occupation was working as a housekeeper. She made a wonderful fruit cake with a heavenly almond icing and many other of Alex's favorites. Helen and Alex travelled to many places around the world. The 200 plus pair of salt & pepper shakers she collected held special memories of their travels. Helen also enjoyed a game of Bingo, especially the Friday night games at Village Green. Helen was predeceased by her parents Veronica and John Czekierda and by her husband Alex of 69 years. Helen is survived by her sister Emily Kovatch of Toronto, niece Verna and Roy Hudson, nephew Bob and Marcy Kovatch, grand nieces Margaret and Kasra Meshkin, Melanie and Fabrizio Zancanaro, grand nephews Michael and Joan Kovatch, Bradley and Genevieve Kovatch, great-grand niece Jamie Kovatch, great-grand nephews Jordan Kovatch and Jakob Zancanaro and Helen's dear friend, Liz O'Neil. A memorial service was held at the Brockie Donovan Chapel on Friday, February 5, 2010 at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. Shannon McCarthy of Central United Church officiating. Interment followed in the Brandon Cemetery. If friends so desire, memorial donations in memory of Helen may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, Unit 3- 824-18th Street, Brandon, MB, R7A 5B7.
