Obituary of Georg Heuchert
HEUCHERT: Georg Heuchert passed away on August 16, 2020 at Valleyview Care Center with family at his side. Georg was born on June 11, 1933 in Galizien, a region of the Ukraine. He was one of eight children. When the war ended, the family settled in a village close to Hamburg, Germany. Because a great deal of work was required to rebuild Hamburg, Georg became a stone mason. At 19 years of age, he built the family a new house. When it was completed he set his sights on Canada, where two of his brothers were living.
Georg met his future wife, Marisch while sailing on the ship bound for Canada. He disembarked the ship with suitcase in hand, a small bit of money, and a train ticket to Winnipeg. There he started a life in a new country. The skills of his trade provided him with much work and he was part of the many buildings you see to this day in Winnipeg. George and his brother drove to Medicine Hat, Alberta several times to see Marisch. When her family moved to Winnipeg, she and Georg were married. Their first son, Ralph was born and Georg built the house they lived in.
In the early 60's Georg moved his family to Brandon and their second son, Philip was born. Again Georg built their house. The city of Brandon was growing and he started his own business known as United Masonry. He was involved with building Vincent Massey and JR Reid Schools and many others in Manitoba. Georg was a very hard worker and creative craftsman. If he could picture a project in his mind, drawings were made, materials gathered and the job was done. Many, many buildings can be seen throughout Brandon, southwest Manitoba and Saskatchewan as testaments of his years of hard work and dedication.
The family moved to the Brandon Hills in the 70's and Georg built another house for his family. They enjoyed nature, the outdoors and loved all the beauty provided by the hills. The family also enjoyed camping and fishing trips. Georg also built a cabin in the Shuswap area of BC. He and Marisch enjoyed being there a few months every year. Georg continued his masonry work there as well. He was rarely idle and always had a project on the go.
Georg suffered a major stroke seven and a half years ago. Very soon after, his wife died suddenly. He was grief stricken and in in poor health, but determined to go home. Georg lived in his own home for 5 more years. This would not have been possible without the support of Home Care and the devotion of his son, Ralph. Georg then became a resident of Valleyview Care Center, where he found the staff to be caring and compassionate. We thank them for their dedication, kindness and hard work.
Georg is survived by his son, Ralph (Kareen); daughter in law, (Katherine); grandchildren, Nolan, Amelia (Ludwin) and Evan; great grandchild, Eva.
He was predeceased by his wife, Marisch in 2013 and son, Philip in 2019.
A private family service will be held at a later date.
