Obituary of Edith May McCann

McCANN: Edith May McCann, beloved wife of the late Roy McCann, formerly of Carberry, Manitoba, passed away at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Saturday, December 10, 2011 at the age of 91 years. Edith was born in Carberry, MB on September 8, 1920 to Ed and Elizabeth Strain and was one of five children. Her siblings, Wib, Clarence "Barney", Lil, and Leslie all predeceased her, leaving her the last surviving child. She grew up in the Stinson area of Carberry and went to school at the Stinson school which was located two miles from her home and had many memories of horse rides to the school with her brothers and sister. She met Roy in Carberry where he worked as a carpenter at the airport where they trained the pilots for the war. They were married on September 20, 1941 and had two children, Elgin and Edward. Edith enjoyed sewing, knitting, quilting, bowling, gardening and curling. After they were married, they lived in Vancouver, BC, then moved back to Carberry, MB in 1963 where they lived until retirement. In their retirement, they travelled Canada and US and later had a place around Phoenix, Arizona where they enjoyed their winters. In 2001, after Roy's passing, Edith moved to Brandon, MB. We remember a Mom who made a wonderful home and family to be brought up in. Hardwood floors were always waxed and polished, everything was dusted and in place. Clothes were always ironed and neatly put away in drawers and closets. Our beds were always made and when she woke us in the morning, breakfast was ready and lunches packed for school. And we must not forget all the baking - pies and cookies, cakes and breads and so much more. Not exactly great food for conditioning, but it sure tasted good. Mom never missed a birthday, and that was eleven times a year. There was always a card and something special for both birthdays and Christmas. But the thing that we were most grateful for is that every day we came home from school Mom was there, along with a snack and a listening ear. The conversations were short, as boys have to be on the move, but it was something we always looked forward to and I believe it established stability in our lives. We will miss Mom's love and communication and we wish we could give and receive one more hug. The memories however, will be passed down to us and the grandkids and will last until our time comes to be with the Lord. Left to cherish her memory are her sons and grandchildren Elgin and wife Debbie, Edward and wife Brenda, and grandchildren Kesh, Matthew, Solomon, Andrew, Jesse, Reuben and Karisa and husband Jaydon Derdall, and many relatives and friends. As per Edith's wishes there will be no funeral service. Donations may be made to the Carberry & District Health Centre, Box 2000, Carberry, MB R0K 0H0.
