Obituary of Jennie Bennett

BENNETT: Jennie Bennett, beloved wife of the late Jack Bennett, passed away on January 29, 2011 at the age of 91 years. She leaves to mourn daughters; Joan (Harry Airey) and family, Christine (Harold Whittingham), and son; Steven (Virginia) and family. She also leaves to mourn niece, Eileen (James) and nephew, Wesley of England. She was born in the Parish of West Cornforth, in the County of Durham, England on December 21, 1919. On February 24, 1941, while Jack was on a 48 hour leave, mom and dad were married. She became a "War Bride" and the next day he was shipped out. On February 17, 1942, Jack was taken prisoner at the fall of Singapore and they were not reunited until August of 1945. Jack and Jennie came to Canada in 1946, on the Ile de France and resided in the Coulter area, where they farmed until 1960. Mom learned how to the drive the tractor and the combine, as well as how to haul the grain. In 1961, the family moved to Wheatlands and then in 1965 they moved on to Brandon. For many years, they travelled back to England to visit relatives. They also visited many other foreign destinations, such as Spain, Australia, New Zealand, Portugal and more. Mom loved going to antique sales, as well as yard sales, to find that great treasure! She spent many peaceful hours in her beautiful flower garden, at their home on First Street. For many years she volunteered with The Red Cross, the Diabetes Association and as well the Summer Games. A memorial service was held at the Brockie Donovan Chapel, on Friday, February 4, 2011 with Rev. John Dolloff of St. Mary's Anglican Church officiating. Interment followed at the Brandon Cemetery. Donations in memory of Jennie may be made to a charity of your choice. "She will be greatly missed by her family."
