Obituary of Hilda Outhwaite

OUTHWAITE: Hilda passed away peacefully at the Brandon Regional Health Centre with her family at her side at the age of 88 years on March 25, 2010. She was predeceased by her husband Ray Outhwaite of 50 years in 1993. She is survived by her four daughters: Gladys (Allan) Pearce, Marilyn (Abe) Peters, Bev (Doug) Roman and Brenda (Dave) Bell. Also by 12 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, two step-grandchildren and one sister, Aleda Schepp of Langenburg, SK. Hilda was born to Peter and Emma Schepp in Marchwell, SK on April 29, 1921. She took her schooling in Marchwell at a one-room schoolhouse. At the age of 19, she decided to join her sister in Austin, MB. There she worked as a housekeeper for a few households. On Saturday nights she would go to the dances with her friends and this is where she met her future husband, Ray Outhwaite. They where married on October 4, 1942. They took up farming for the first few years but soon decided farming was not lucrative enough and decided to move to Brandon in 1951. She was a stay at home Mom and looked after her daughters until they where older, and in 1961 she decided to go to work. She first started working as a Health Care Aid for Sunset Haven Nursing Home and then to the Old Assiniboine Hospital. When the new Assiniboine Hospital was built she worked there until she retired in 1984. Hilda and Ray built a cabin at Ditch Lake where they spent many summers enjoying the lake. They were also able to travel to Texas for three winters. After Ray passed away, Hilda took bus trips. She went to California, Florida and the East Coast. She took trips to England and Switzerland but the highlight of her travels was to Australia. In 2002, she moved into Odd Fellows Corner where she made new friends and enjoyed all the activities there. She enjoyed Southminster Church where she was a member for many years and she helped with the teas, bake sales and garage sales. The Funeral Service will be held at the Brockie Donovan Chapel, 332-8th Street, on Monday, March 29, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Paul Sakasov of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church officiating. Interment will follow at the Carberry Plains Cemetery. Donations in memory of Hilda may be made to a charity of choice.
