Obituary of Ted Hurd

Ted Hurd passed away on Monday, May 16, 2011, with family members at his side. Born April 25, 1923, to Cecil and Dorthy Hurd in Albany, the youngest of four children; Alice, Nelson, and Walter, he was raised in Eugene and attended Eugene High School and later attended both the University of Oregon and Oregon State University. He married Donova Wilson in 1943 and they had two daughters, Linda and Karla. Following his service in World War II as a Naval Gunnery Instructor, Ted's working years were spent in the wood products industry. After working for Don Barker, he then retired after 42 years with Giustina Brothers' Lumber and Plywood Company as their Production Manager. Ted served as one of the original members of the Lane Regional Air Protection Agency. He was an active member of the Eugene Elks Lodge where he served as Exalted Ruler, Oregon State President, and twice as the District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler. A true family man; Ted spent countless weekends camping, hunting, and fishing with his family and close friends around the state. He was especially fond of camping anywhere east of the Cascades. Ted was an avid sports fan of all sports; he, himself, was a competitive bowler. In his early years, he sang in a barbershop quartet at the 1939 San Francisco Golden Gate International Exposition. A little known fact is that Ted was an accomplished dancer. He enjoyed a daily dose of Fox News, solving crossword puzzles, and was a history buff of Oregon's early settlement. The Scottsburg and Elkton areas where his grandfather homesteaded were of particular interest to him. He had a passion for writing and published a personal hunting story in the "Oregon Fish and Wildlife Journal" in 2004. Traveling was also a favorite pastime, with Mexico and cruising the Caribbean as favorite destinations. Ted was also proud of the fact he donated over 5 gallons of blood to the Oregon Blood Bank throughout the years. Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Linda; daughter and son-in-law, Karla and Mark Aman; daughter, Linda; daughter-in-law, Wendy Brockmann; and son, Dave Coombs; seven grandchildren--Matt, Kaylee, Teddy, Tyler, Tony, Maria, and David; and five greatgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Donova; two brothers, Walter and Nelson; sister Alice; son, Billy; and his dog, Taffy. No services are planned, per his wishes. In-lieu-of flowers, contributions in Ted's memory may be made to Oregon Dog Rescue (3300 NW 185th - PMB 97, Portland, OR 97229) or the Public Safety Memorial Fund (Attn: Linsay Bassler, 4190 Aumsville Hwy SE, Salem, OR 97317).Please sign the guest book at www.registerguard.com/legacy
