Obituary of Nathlin Cushnie
Nathlin, affectionately called Mama, Tin, and Miss Cush transitioned on Sunday, October 18, 2020, at 4:11 p.m. 2 months shy of her 90th birthday.Mama was very proud of her children and delighted by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.She was a loving mother of Marcia Ward and Ian Miller, a very committed and self-giving grandmother of Ruth-Anne, Rayon, Lian, Lauren, Kaitlyn, Lloyd, and Rohan; and affectionate great grandmother to Rhianna, Rhyden, Nicolas, Rayon Jr, Kolyn, Tyler and Tianna. Mama adored all the spouses of her children and grandchildren, Basil, Kay, Nicole, Rupel, Kerry-Ann and Angella.Mama is survived by sisters, brothers, nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.Born and raised in the cool hills of St. Thomas, Jamaica, she worked in the garment industry. Mama was always creative in generating additional income to provide for her family. She reared livestock and sold meals to coworkers to supplement her wage. From there, using the cooking skills learnt from her relatives Miss Pat and Sadie, she opened a retail grocery shop.Mama spent the lion share of her working life at her owner-operated grocery shop. She supplied her community of Waltham Park with groceries, pastries, and cooked meals. If you got to her store too late all the culinary goodies would be gone.A few of her most beloved meals were her cornmeal and sweet potato puddings, toto, fried fish, fritters, fried dumplings, fried chicken, fried plantain and more. As we say in Jamaica, “She could really take her hands and make fashion.” She could use almost anything to make something delicious. For over 60 years, Mama was a proud member of the Whitfield Town Church of God in Kingston, Jamaica. Mama resided in Canada for the last 20 years. She visited the Whitfield Town Church of God on each visit to Jamaica. Mama also attended St. Richard’s Catholic Church in Kingston, Jamaica, Grace Baptist and St. Josephine Bakhita Parish in Mississauga.Mama whom was very humble, generous, loving, pious, caring and dedicated to others will be deeply missed by her family, nieces, nephews, extended family, friends, and all the people she touched. As directed by the Province of Ontario and the Bereavement Authority of Ontario the attendance at the funeral and cemetery is restricted to 30% capacity or less and a record of attendance must be maintained.Wearing of masks, or face coverings, by everyone is mandatory during their time in the funeral home or cemetery.Respecting the current situation and pandemic building restrictions, a Service will be held for invited guests only.At this time we ask that you kindly join our family via live stream for the Funeral Mass by clicking on the following link on Saturday, October 31, 2020 at 10:25 a.m.www.livememorialservices.com/H ome/ServiceDetail/7097Password: Cushnie2020Following the service there will be a short break in the live streaming as we move to the Cemetery, please use the following link to join our family for the burial.www.livememorialservices.com/H ome/ServiceDetail/7099Password: Cushnie2020
