Obituary of Kathleen Gladys Shouldice
Kathleen ShouldiceMary Kathleen Gladys Macdonald was born 31 Aug 1917 in Georgetown, PEI, as war raged in Europe, two weeks after her grandfather Archibald J. Macdonald died and 8 months before her uncle Temple died on the battlefields of France. She was born ninth of 13 children to Allister and Bessie (MacPhee) Macdonald. She died October 10, 2020.Mom was predeceased by her husband Arnold Roy “Hap” Shouldice, two sons, John Michael and Andrew, and all of her siblings, Agnes, Colin, Helen, Jean, Grace, Hugh, Dorothy, John, Temple, Connie, Howard, and Aletha. She is survived by her children, Craig (Janet), Phil (Monica), and Deb Plumb (Larry), a sister-in-law, Phyllis (widow of Howard), and 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, 2 great-greatgrandchildren and an awesome number of nieces and nephews.Mom was born into the Spanish Flu Pandemic and the Great War, became a teenager as the world sank into the Great Depression. In 1942, war was raging once again, so she took the civil service exam and accepted a job in Ottawa, where workers were needed to replace the men who went overseas. One of those men was her fiance, Arnold Shouldice. In 1944, Kathleen’s brother Hugh (Boysie) died in the battle to liberate Holland. When Arnold returned in 1946, they married and built a family. She and Arnold never had much money, but the family never wanted for anything important. They owned their own home, but never a car. Food, shelter, and an education was their dream for us. In 1969, our youngest brother, John Michael, died in a traffic accident, just 11. Arnold never really gotover it and he passed 8 years later at 57. Mom kept working at the National Defense Medical Centre until retiring in 1984. In April of this year, her eldest son, Andrew succumbed to COPD.As Andrew’s own words, she was a GREAT Mom.The funeral will be a private family affair on Thursday afternoon, with interment to follow alongside Arnie, John Michael, and Andy in Capital Memorial Gardens. For those not attending in person, the ceremony will be livestreamed on Thursday, October 15 at 1:00pm via http://www.livememorialservices.com/Home/ServiceDetail/6893 In lieu of flowers, we would ask that Mom’s relatives and friends consider a donation to their favourite charity. Mom supported Plan International Canada for many years. We would like to thank the staff at the Westwood (Revera) for the past 4 years attending to her every need and keeping her safe and secure. The current pandemic denied her regular visitation and that had an enormous emotional impact, but their care made a difference for her. We will carry on, as she would have done.
