Stanley Sampson

Obituary of Stanley Sampson

God’s angels came to get Uncle Stan Tuesday, late afternoon, October 6th, 2020. He was very aware until his last breath. His sister Isabel, nieces Nancy and Debra were with him continually in the days before and holding his hands until the moment he left us. He is no longer suffering and surely among those in Heaven, being lovingly greeted by his parents Abby Sampson and Marie Ange Essiembre as well as his brother Ralph Sampson and many relatives and friends.Stanley is survived by his ever loving sister, Isabel Sampson. We all know how devoted she was making sure he was always cared for, before and after the injury. He is also survived by his brother Patrick Sampson (wife Terry), nieces Nancy Welyhorsky, Debra Landry, Linda Sampson, Vicki Sampson, Isabelle Sampson, and each of their families as well as many cousins and extended family members.Despite having survived a life changing assault at the age of 21 that left him brain damaged and physically disabled, it never defined him. He was strong, smart, and fun. He liked having good times with family and friends. He was able to make friends from all walks of life throughout various cities where he lived, Montreal, Sudbury, Toronto, and finally Milton. He was always up for a family get together, enjoying conversation, food, and a playing game of chess (which he was remarkably skilled at, and sometimes would let us win when he could tell we were starting to feel defeated). He had a great sense of humour, a positive attitude, and plenty of vigor. You never had to guess if he was upset with something, he would definitely let you know. He was someone who definitely left a lasting impression! He will be remembered for his resiliency. We have lots of unbelievable funny stories and his life has taught us how to handle illness and never give up as well as having empathy and compassion for those in difficult life circumstances. Despite his own life challenges, he still saw himself as more fortunate than many. The family would like to thank all the kind staff at The Credit Valley Hospital and Allendale nursing home in Milton. We know at times it could take a lot of patience. (And by the way he always said the food was 10 out of 10!) To the kind and compassionate doctors who cared for Stanley, Dr. Nagy, Dr. Dudley, Dr. Anderson at the Milton District Hospital you are all angels. We would also like to thank all the amazing nurses at the Milton District Hospital, all of you in 2 south and 3 south who looked after him with each of the recent admissions, and of course the nurses and care aides at Allendale too. In a just society, health care aides and/or personal support workers would be returned to hospital settings and increased in nursing homes - settings where nurses and care aids are currently overworked, underpaid doing one of the most important jobs in the world, caring for the ill, the aged, and the dying. It is also with much gratitude that we thank all the management and staff at Mind Forward Brain Injury Services in Mississauga. When it was not physically or emotionally possible anymore to care for Stanley at his apartment, the team at Mind Forward began helping us search for residential care as well as provide day visits and programs for him during the long wait for a place, and also spending time with him at Allendale. Again, in a just society, it would not be so difficult to find supportive housing for brain injured individuals. For this reason the family asks that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to Mind Forward Brain Injury Services, 176 Robert Speck Pkwy, Mississauga, Ontario. Thank you to Ron B. for always providing medical transport back and forth from Credit Valley for over 2 years, to Mind Forward or to our home, often on short notice, and most of all being another friend to Stanley. Rest in peace Uncle Stan, thank you for being part of our lives. You are loved and will always be remembered.
