Obituary of Myrtle Ashman

MYRTLE MAY ASHMAN (NEE HOLNESS)It is with great sadness that we announce that at the age of 94, and after a lengthy battle with Dementia, our beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, passed away peacefully at Humber River Regional Hospital on September 28, 2020 at 5:10 am, she is now with the lord. Myrtle was born in Aenon town, in the parish of Clarendon, Jamaica in 1926 to Clara James and Clarence Holness. She is predeceased by her sister, Sylvia Reynold (2001), and her brother Alfred Baimbridge (2016). Myrtle is survived by her daughters Fay Scott, Marilyn Morgan, Margaret Reid, and Marcia Ashman.Myrtle, as a young woman, left Aenon Town to live and work in Kingston, from there she immigrated to Canada in 1960 through the West Indian Domestic Scheme, which ran from 1955 to 1978. After working under the scheme, all workers were allowed to get their Landed Status, and seek employment elsewhere. Following her stint as a domestic worker, she worked for the Hospital for Sick Children, where she had some great years, forming some long-lasting friendships. She loved her job as a food service dietitian, preparing meals for the children and staff. She later completed a Food Service Technique course at George Brown College, under the auspices of the Sick Children Hospital. This allowed her to advance within her field at Sick Kids. She retired from the Hospital in her late 60s.Myrtle enjoyed cooking and baking, and she especially loved baking, creating some amazing wedding cakes for friends and family. Once she retired, she continued her passion for baking, cooking and hosting her family and friends and of course attending church each Sunday. She also spent her retiring years travelling and experienced the joy of visiting Israel with her church four times!She leaves behind her precious grand-children Andrea, Adrian, Dayan, Janice, Nadia, Richard, Ryan, Andrew, Rashad, Natalie and Lyn. Great-grandchildren Joelle, Hannah, Zoe, Malik, Kalyssa, Annabelle, Dominic, Daniel, Johnathan, Malachi, Isaiah, Michael-Carlos, Josiah, Makayla-Angel, Malia, Ashleigh and Mekhi. Son in laws, Roy Scott and Michael Reid. Myrtle, also fondly known by friends as aunty Murkes, and grandma by all her grandchildren and great- grandchildren, will be greatly missed by her family and friends,Special thanks to all the staff at Weston Terrace Care Community, for taking care of mom for the past year and a half.A long standing member of the Prayer Palace Church, her Funeral service will take place at Prayer Palace (1111 Arrow road, Toronto, ON., M9M 3B3) on Saturday Oct 10th, with a viewing from 9 am, and funeral service at 10 am. Viewing will be held at the Scott Funeral Home – West Toronto Chapel (1273 Weston Road, Toronto, ON., M6M 4R2, 416-243-0202) Friday Oct. 9th from 4pm to 8pm. Due to COVID19pandemic restrictions, viewing and funeral attendance are by invitation only.
