Obituary of Dorothy Lenore Thompson

Dorothy Lenore Thompson (nee Scovell) 79, of Oshawa, passed peacefully on September 25, 2020, at Hillsdale Estates LTC with her daughter Suzanne and son Chris close by. Dorothy is survived by her daughter Suzanne (Tom), son Christopher (Jessica), Brother Murray and grandchildren Collin and Cameron.Dorothy was born in Toronto in 1941, the youngest of 6. She attended Teachers College and soon embarked upon her life-long passion of teaching and inspiring young minds. She primarily taught kindergarten for the TDSB, staying up until the wee hours meticulously cutting bits of paper and planning for the next days’ lessons. She brought music, storytelling and play into her classroom every day. She also taught English for New Canadians at night, and was a Sunday School Director for many years at her church. Dorothy met her husband, Richard, in Yorkville in the early 60’s, where they were a part of the coffee shop beatnik scene in Toronto, and they married at Bedford Park United church in 1965. Dorothy loved socializing and planned many theme and costume parties, playing spoons and charades late into the night. She had a competitive nature and loved playing word games, card games and board games, which kept her mind active and agile even in her later years. Dorothy and Richard loved to travel, visiting Peru, hiking to Machu Pitchu and camping on the Amazon River, Spain, Garden Tours in England, and epic family trips to Egypt and Italy. Every summer they would spend at least a week camping at their favourite sites in Arrowhead Provincial Park, enjoying the scenery and serenity. In 1997 they moved to their dream home in Lindsay, ON, where she and Richard became members of Queen Street United Church, serving on many committees, and were active members of the Lindsay community. Dorothy always did more than her share, lending a helping hand wherever she could. She also loved to garden, and her perennial gardens were spectacular. Dorothy moved into long term care in Oshawa and was shortly joined by her husband, and they lived closely together until Richard passed away at the end of December, 2019. A very special thank you to her caregivers at Hillsdale Estates where she resided for the last 2 and half years.
