Obituary of Hubert Weitz

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Hubert Weitz, at the age of 93 3/4, after a courageous battle with cancer. He is survived by his loving wife Gertrud and devoted children Michael and Susan (husband Eric). He will be missed by his Sisters-in-Law Ingrid and Gudrun (partner Tim) and niece Vanessa and extended family and friends. He was very proud to have recently celebrated 65 years of marriage to the wife he believed was a gift from God. They met at Union Station after Gertrud’s arrival in Canada and he was immediately smitten - he told a friend that day that he had met the woman he was going to marry. She was grateful for his offer of general assistance as someone who had immigrated 2 years prior, and was glad of his offer to drive her to the employment office but may have been less impressed when it became necessary for her to push his car to help get it started.Hubert enjoyed a long career with CP Rail, including many years on the 4 p.m. to midnight shift in the offices at Agincourt yard. As part of workplace safety measures, he received First Aid training, participated in competitions and won awards as part of a team for knowledge, speed and skill in disaster simulations. He also helped out with the local union, at one time chairing meetings - his kids were impressed that he had a gavel! They were also delighted and amused to learn that after a meeting where someone proposed an action that involved a significant expenditure that Dad didn’t agree was necessary, he was bestowed with the nickname Hubert-El-Cheapo (though sadly, the kids were expressly forbidden from using it).He enjoyed scouring the weekly grocery store flyers and could tell you which store had which item on sale and if it was a good deal or not - which may have kept his brain sharp and accounted for his excellent memory. His love of gardening and especially working in his vegetable garden helped keep him in good physical shape as well - though his love of ice cream might have worked against that.Hubert was generous with his time when it came to volunteer work, His friendly, social nature and desire to make a positive contribution to the community led him to volunteer with the Toronto Auxiliary Police in March of 1961. He continued to be an active member until very recently, earning accolades and awards for his years of community service. In more recent years, he enjoyed supporting initiatives of the Aboriginal Peacekeeping Unit and attending community events with the first and last yellow police cars - the ’57 Chevy and the ’88 Plymouth and with Blinky the talking police car. He seemed to especially enjoy being the voice of Blinky during the Santa Claus parade and the close friendships he made over the years. He was a regular blood donor and was proud to have made 113 donations before reaching the age limit for a blood donor at that time.He was active and youthful and until recently, no one believed that he was remotely close to his 90+ years of age. His quick wit, love of puns and Dad jokes might have contributed to that youthful impression. He always had a joke for you (or himself) even very recently. Overheard on a call from a real estate agent (RA): “If you were to leave your house and move, where would that move take you?” Dad: “Glen Oaks.” RA: “I’m not sure where that is?” Dad: “It’s a cemetery” …awkward silence … Dad laughs. (Note - we still aren’t selling the house - please don’t call us.)As persistent as his sense of humour was, so too was his desire to be helpful - even in a tired state after a radiation treatment at Sunnybrook Hospital, he noticed a woman who appeared lost and instructed his daughter to “go see if there isn’t something you can do to help the woman out”. Though he faced a number of health challenges in the last year and a half, he was always grateful for the excellent care he received at the Scarborough Health Network Hospitals, and was also very appreciative of and impressed by thoroughness and dedication shown in his care by the Cancer and other Supportive Care teams at Sunnybrook Hospital. He counted himself as extremely lucky and grateful to enjoy a longstanding relationship with an exceptionally caring and supportive family doctor. His family wishes to extend their gratitude to all the doctors and staff who were so patient and dedicated with his care.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Hubert’s memory to the Sunnybrook Hospital Foundation or the Scarborough Health Network Foundation or any charity of your choosing. At this time we kindly as you to join our family via live stream on Wednesday, September 2, 2020 at 12:55 p.m. by clicking the following link.https://www.distantlink.com/DLM77.htmlPassword: Arbor1 Please take a moment to sign the online guestbook.
