Dinesh was a wonderful storyteller to Sandhya, Shayla and Tejas and even encouraged Michelle to write and tell stories for her students. So now I share with you the story of Dinesh.Over 86 years ago, Dinesh was born in Dhar, India. He often spoke of a desire to see his birth place again. Only the very early part of his life was spent there. Then his parents decided to send him to live with his doctor grandparents Nana and Nani in Rajasthan and subsequently Moradabad, because his father’s civil engineering profession required him to move around too much. Needless to say, Dinesh was the very spoiled grandson of his Nana and Nani. After spending his early years - up to about 12 years old with them, he was sent back to live with his parents, who had settled in Delhi. It was here Dinesh completed his secondary school years and went on to study engineering. He pursued studies in electrical engineering and worked first at the power plant in Delhi. Both Dinesh and his parents wanted him to study further, so off he went to London England in 1963.Dinesh had interesting stories to tell about the many people he met there and the career experiences he had at the Yorkshire Electricity Board. While living in Leeds, he became very good friends with Kailash Dhir who encouraged him in his career. By 1964, Dinesh met his friend Vinod Bhalla - a friendship that spanned the ocean and continued later in Canada to this day.Although Dinesh enjoyed his studies and experiences in England, he decided to see what Canada had to offer, so he applied to Westinghouse and arrived in London Ontario where he worked briefly before being transferred to Hamilton Ontario. It was now 1965 and Dinesh once again found himself meeting new friends as well as working at his new job. One of his earliest new buddies was Susheel Beri. They became very close as there were very few Indians in the community of Hamilton at the time. One evening in November of 1965, Dinesh and Susheel went to the YMCA for dancing lessons. It was here, Dinesh met a young teacher - Michelle. From this time on, he made up his mind that Michelle was the girl to marry and so on July 20, 1968, they were married with his best friend Susheel standing by his side as his best man. Just before his marriage to Michelle, Dinesh welcomed to Canada the person who became one of his very best friends, Satish Kumar. Satish was later joined by his wife Usha. As they grew, their lovely girls, Vasudha , Rohini and Vineeta were there for the rest of his life with love and support in more ways than anyone can count. After a long honeymoon which saw the new couple in England, Switzerland and then India, Michelle had the pleasure of meeting Dinesh’s parents for the first time. Thank you to Manju and Shashi for teaching Michelle some Indian customs to make Michelle feel comfortable. She was welcomed with open arms by Dinesh’s family.Life goes on, and Dinesh, once back in Hamilton decided to pursue a job at I.T.E. Circuit Breakers. Again he was successful and immediately began working at I.T.E. on Dixie Road in Mississauga.Soon with Michelle, he decided to move to Mississauga to be closer to work, Michelle also started teaching in Mississauga where they lived for the rest of their married lives - over 52 years.Dinesh always had a desire to continue his engineering career at Ontario Hydro and he was hired and then pursued over 20 years at OPG working at power plants in Pickering and Kingston. He was always very proud of his work and it can even be said that he bragged about never being out of work one day in his career.Besides his work career, Dinesh mentioned many times that he wanted to have a daughter in his life. So on December 31st 1972 Sandhya Kumari was born. Just before Sandhya came into the world Dinesh and Michelle moved into their first home. As well they invited Michelle’s mother, grandmother and sister to move from Hamilton to live with them in Mississauga.Young children grow up, and before you know it, Dinesh and Michelle’s little baby became a beautiful bride when she happily married Naveen Chopra. Dinesh was so proud of them.It was not long before Dinesh became Nana to two lovely grand- children Shayla and Tejas - the two bright lights shining in his life.Dinesh loved his family and friends and neighbours and demonstrated his affection in summer backyard BBQ’s, Christmas parties and personally delivering fresh vegetables grown in his own backyard garden. He was also known for helping friends to install ceiling fans, garage door openers and more. He took great pride in socializing and being there for family and friends. He was a very proud person who always spoke of his family with love even though they were spread out in Canada, Moscow and the U.S.A. and of course India. His greatest challenge of all was just over five weeks ago when he suffered an illness that really brought down this proud and generous person. Unfortunately, and sadly on Friday, August 21st he left us.Today, we say goodbye to this amazing person but will never forget his love, friendship, generous heart and dedication. Thank you Dinesh. This little light of mine… Let it shine...Let it shine… You will shine on in all our hearts now and forever.
