Obituary of Peter Meyer
It is with great sadness that the family of Peter Meyer announces his passing on August 6th, 2020 after a courageous battle with cancer.Peter’s life and memories will be cherished forever by his wife Lynn, who was blessed to enjoy his generous, charming, and loving nature for over 55 years. They shared a warmth and devotion which fueled their love through decades of happiness and bound them in common strength and dignity during life’s challenges and difficulties. Theirs was a special and lasting partnership.Peter will be fondly and forever held in the hearts of his sons Scott and Trevor, their spouses Melanie and Manuela, and by his adoring grandchildren Quinn, Zoie and Logan. He is also survived and remembered by his sister Doreen and her children Michael and Nicole and by his sister and brother in law Heather and Rick and their children Kevin and Kim. Family was the true heartbeat of Peter’s wonderful life and he passed in peace feeling its support and love around him.Peter was born in Montreal, Quebec to John and Alexandrine Meyer and began his life in the village of Mont Tremblant where he enjoyed a warm upbringing and fun filled childhood. Peter learned to live for hockey and this passion persisted through countless teams and territories. Peter’s dedication to hockey ultimately led him to leave his parents’ side in California and return to Montreal in order to stay in the game. Peter’s natural skills carried him to high levels of play, culminating in a stint with the Junior A Prince Albert Mintos in Saskatchewan. Peter eventually followed his parents’ footsteps into a long career in the hospitality industry. Progressing from summer jobs at the Banff Springs Fairmont Hotel, Peter held numerous well-earned management positions in the food industry for 50 years. Beginning with SAGA Food Service Inc., his career progressed quickly until he found his true calling in human resources. For the last 35 years of his working career, Peter served as Vice-President of Human Resources for Marriott Corporation’s, and later Sodexo’s, Canadian management services sector, a position well suited to his passionate, personable, and caring character. He eventually retired in 2002 as the VP of Human Resources (Emeritus) with Sodexo. During his career he touched and influenced the lives of many hospitality executives, contributing significantly to their success. He mentored from the heart, resolved conflict with wisdom and guided those around him to excel. Within Canada’s hospitality industry, Peter was a highly regarded and well-respected professional whose opinion and counsel was often sought. Many of his colleagues have remained his best and closest friends throughout his life.Outside of work Peter’s positive influence on those around him was undeniable. He was patient, caring, honest, joyous and fun loving. He gave the benefit of the doubt, thought of others first, led by example, and never, ever gave up. To his sons Scott and Trevor he was the measuring stick for how a father, husband, friend and stranger should be. As a father and husband, he built a perfect family. Strong values which built a strong foundation to grow on. As a friend Peter was magnetic. His friendships were rooted in respect and kindness and a rare generosity which made him special to everyone who had the pleasure of being his friend. According to his dearest friends Peter had the personality and a crazy laugh/giggle that made people want to be close to him. And to strangers Peter had something most people just do not, a sincere interest; he was inviting and open to anyone who happened by. To family, friends and even strangers, Peter was a genuine inspiration. We will miss Peter greatly, for all he stood for and all he allowed us to become. In honour of his full and heartfelt life we rejoice in his memory. A private celebration of Peter’s life will be held once it is safe to do so and we can be together once again. If you would like to make a donation please consider the Ottawa Hospital Foundation - Cancer Research: https://ohfoundation.ca/cancer-research-the-ottawa-hospital/
