Obituary of Cyril G. Smith
Cyril “Cy" Smith, born in Kingston, ON, August 16, 1925, passed peacefully in Ottawa on August 3, 2020. Predeceased by his beloved sister Shirley June Menzel (née Smith). Survived by his loving wife Myrle June (née Radke), and daughter Katherine Anne and son in law Bradley Crewson.Cy dedicated 36 years of service to Bell Canada, from 1948 to 1984. His career spanned 4 decades, from lineman work in Ontario and Arctic regions, to telecommunications in Montreal and Ottawa.Second to his undying love for his family, was Cy's love for music. A Toronto Conservatory graduate, Cy entertained at many gatherings by playing trumpet or cornet while simultaneously playing the piano/keyboard. Cy played trumpet and cornet in numerous bands: the Grey Jazz, Big Band Revival, Swing Junction, and for five decades led his own jazz trio 4x3+1. His music and gift of engaging the audience with humour and passion for performing were experienced by hundreds of individuals, many of whom were incapacitated by illness, injury and the challenges of aging. His tireless dedication to volunteering his talents earned him the Bell Hero award in 2005 - an award recognizing dedication to volunteering in community service.Cy’s family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude for the tireless support and compassion of the staff, PSWs, and nurses of the Ravines Retirement Community. Deep gratitude goes to Dr. Laura Visentin and the Bayshore nurses, and in particular to Kate McKenzie for her incredible care and concern. A celebration of Cy's life will be announced when all can gather safely and comfortably.In memory of Cy, the family requests donations be made to The Good Companions Seniors’ Centre in Ottawa.
