Obituary of Charitomeni Hatzicosta-Soukri
It is with heartfelt sorrow that we announce the passing of Charitomeni (Mary) Hatzicosta Soukri. Mary was 92 years old. Born in Alexandria to Eleftherios and Varvara Hatzicosta, mother of Jason (Mary Ann) of Oakville and Mervat of Athens, and grandmother (Yaya) of Alexander (AJ), Jonathan and Elena. Mary emigrated to Canada in 1993 choosing Burlington as her second home. Over the years she grew to love the different seasons, even coming to tolerate the cold Canadian winters. The Schmidt-Shoukri family will remember Yaya’s delicious pastitsio, phyllo, yemista and spaghetti dinners which were her grandchildren’s favourites over the years. Yaya will also be missed by Kenzy, Monseigneur Jules, Jason’s “Collège des Frères” and Mervat’s “Notre Dame des Apôtres” childhood classmates.With family at her bedside at the Joseph-Brant Hospital in Burlington, Mary peacefully passed away on July 30, 2020. Mary (Yaya) will be greatly missed by family members in Canada, Greece and France.As directed by the Province of Ontario and the Bereavement Authority of Ontario the attendance at the funeral and cemetery is restricted to 30% capacity or less and a record of attendance must be maintained.Wearing of masks, or face coverings, by everyone is mandatory during their time in the funeral home or cemetery.Respecting the current situation and pandemic building restrictions, a Service will be held for invited guests only.A private funeral service will take place on Thursday August 6, 2020 at Glen Oaks Cemetery.
