There he married his loving wife, Theresia, who predeceased him by two years and one day (Ed did not steal her thunder, as he was known to do, and waited one more day to be reunited with her as he knew there would be trouble in paradise if he passed on “her day”). Ed loved all things Dutch and anything that reminded him of Holland. Theresia and Ed set sail on the M.S. Sibajak in April 1952 and made their way to Canada where they made their home and had a family. 92 years of life; what a celebration of a life well lived. For those of you who knew Ed none of this will come as a surprise as he loved to talk and talk and tell all of his stories more than once. Of all the stories, the one that stands out is the trip he took with his brother, Gerard, across Canada and the United States in a Caravan and if you were lucky you have seen the pictures of this trip a few times. He was very proud of his home and garden and was granted the Trillium award for his colourful and well planned out lawn. He loved to talk about politics and maybe even was swayed to the side of the current president of the USA! Ed had hands of gold and could fix anything from a leaky faucet to a taking apart a car engine and also could put together a piece of IKEA furniture without the instructions. During the last year he lived at Taunton Village retirement home and he loved it there, especially his friends and the staff. A special shout out to Diane who made him feel very special in his new home. He even embraced some new hobbies such as singing and dancing (and could he sing), making crafts, enjoying many community outings, watching Channel 42 and talking about the ships, trains and planes that he saw on this show and he loved having a beer at happy hour on Fridays. Ed had a very strong work ethic and worked hard during his life. He worked as a mechanical engineer and those hands of gold came in handy. He was loved and supported by his children, Monika Fic (Kym) and Robert Fic (Anne), his grandchildren, Shayne Fic and Kaytlynn Pearn (Kyle) and their mother, Sherie. However, his eyes especially lit up when he got to visit his great-granddaughter, Maddyx and when he met his newest great-grandson, Tucker. He was also loved by many other family members and friends too many to mention. It took a village to support him during the last two years and we want to thank all the friends who helped cook, take care of his lawn, and visit with Ed. A special thank you to his neighbour Bruce and Rose who went above and beyond. He kept in touch with his family in Holland with many visits back home and in his later years over the phone, especially with his brother, Garrett. Ed loved life, made the most of his 92 years and now is with the love of his life. He will be missed.A special thanks to the staff at Taunton Village and at the Palliative care wing of Oshawa General Hospital. In lieu of flowers, we welcome you to make donations to the Children’s Aid of Toronto Foundation or to the Alzheimer’s association.
