Obituary of Mary Colwell

Mary Margaret Brooks Colwell passed away on July 12, 2020 at the Ottawa Civic Hospital after suffering a massive stroke.She was the daughter of Murray and Isabel Duclos. Mary leaves behind Rupert, her husband of 69 years; their children Charles (Val), Edward (Sandra), Margaret Beth (deceased), Marguerite (Robert Brosseau), Scott(Crystal); nine grandchildren: Cassandra, Lydia (Parthy Chandrasekaran), Darcy (Lindsey), Keith (Ally), Melissa (Andrew Merks), Shane (Ai), Emily (Hayden Dopson), Jessica (Evan Jungton), Clinton, and five great-grandchildren: Maven, Suja, Arun, Ava, and Lylah. A brother Murray (Christa) predeceased her; three sisters-in-law: Isobel (George Spicer, deceased); Charline (Walter Smith, deceased, Doug Rouse, deceased), Helen (deceased), (Maudie Doughtry); brother-in-law Laurin (Carley) and 14 nieces and nephews.Being the daughter of a CPR Civil Engineer, Mary spent her childhood moving from North Bay to Sudbury to Smiths Falls and finally to Woodstock NB Where she attended Woodstock High School and was a member of the school basketball team. After graduating in 1947 she attended Woodstock Vocational for a year where she took commercial subjects which she later used in her accounting career with Clark Motors in Fredericton and Bell Canada in Montreal. Mary enjoyed golf until an overzealous teacher tried to change her from a lefty to a right shot. She gave the game up until the children were grown when she once again enjoyed the game as a lefty. She was an avid reader, her preference being the bible and religious literature. She loved doing all sorts of arts and crafts. She played the piano and achieved her grade 8 level despite having kids banging the keys on each side of her and the dog howling in the background as she played. Mary will be remembered for her devotion to her faith, her generosity, and her love for her husband, her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her warm friendly smile will be missed by all.The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff at the Civic Hospital for their kindness and attention.No flowers please.As per Mary's wishes there will be no visitation. A service in her memory will be streamed live.
