Obituary of Maria Flikas

Maria Flikas, nee Samaras, passed away on June 27, 2020, due to a long and challenging struggle with cancer. She was 80 years old.Mary, as she was known to her family and friends, was a brilliant gardener, wonderful cook, and devout Greek Orthodox who never missed a Sunday or a religious holiday away from church. Her faith in God, the Virgin Mary, and our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ was what galvanized her efforts to fight her illness over the past three years. Her faith had always been what gave her the hope and strength to meet the challenges she faced throughout her life.Mary’s passion for serving her church and her community is recognized by the many generous donations she made, even with her limited resources, to churches and monasteries throughout Canada and Greece over the many years in order to help the monks, the nuns, the priests, the poor, and the homeless. Few people knew of her struggles with her health as she kept pushing through the pain, and because of her indomitable faith in God, she never lost hope in her recovery. Mary was the mother of two daughters, Despina and Anna. Despina, her eldest, worked tirelessly to help her over the past three years and to provide her with support and care throughout her fight with cancer. Despina, Anna, and Mary’s granddaughter and namesake Maria, were all there with her in her final moments.Mary is survived by her daughters Despina and Anna and granddaughter Maria. Her family asks that in lieu of flowers donations be made to Colorectal Cancer Canada.
