Obituary of Edward Tat Man Ng

Edward Tat Man Ng passed away on May 19, 2020. He left behind his partner Sue and their child Chris, mother Yee Chong, siblings John, Amy (Ken), and Helen (Art), nieces and nephew Dale, Leanne, Megan, and Lian. He is survived by his ex-wife Amanda and pre-deceased by his father, Wai Sang.Ed was born in Hong Kong on May 17, 1955. His family lived in Hong Kong until they immigrated to Winnipeg in 1971. According to his mother, Ed was a smart but mischievous youth. Oh how he talked back! His family moved to Canada because his parents wanted to give their children opportunities for a better life. He excelled academically in high school. In 1972, 16-year old Ed placed first out of 20,000 students in a national math contest. He was the first Manitoban to win the Canadian Junior Mathematics Contest sponsored by University of Waterloo with "near perfect marks!" This story made the news and the small Chinese community in Winnipeg were very proud, not to mention his family!Winning the math contest set the path for Ed’s life. He received a full scholarship to the University of Waterloo. In 1973, right after high school, Ed followed his passion for math and entered the Faculty of Mathematics, majoring in Actuarial Science and Computer Science. He was resourceful, able to support himself through university and requiring little help from his parents. He met his wife Sue as well as many life-long friends at the university.Ed met Sue in 1975 when she arrived in Waterloo as a first-year student. They married in 1981 and moved to Toronto, bought a house, expanded their careers. They were blessed with the arrival of their child Chris in 1991, the first of 5 grandchildren for Ed’s excited family. In 1999 Ed's family relocated to Hong Kong for work. During this time, Ed and Sue worked for the same company, Manulife Financial. He worked in the Asia regional office, and she worked for the Hong Kong office. While in Hong Kong, the family was fortunate to get to know and become close to Ed's extended family in Hong Kong. Sadly Ed and Sue’s careers took a toll on their relationship but they eventually reconnected and became close friends in the past few years, bonded by their love for Chris. In 2004 Sue and Chris moved back to Canada so Chris could attend high school locally.Ed met Amanda in Hong Kong and they married in 2008. They both enjoyed travelling. They were married for 9 years. In recent years, Ed started to live part-time in Canada to enjoy the pleasant summer and early fall weather of Toronto, playing tennis with the Don Mills Tennis Club and exploring hiking trails with Sue and his long-time friends. He enjoyed trying different restaurants and ordering his favourite dishes, like barbecue duck and lobster. He loved to order set dinners for 6 for just 4 people! He also spent time helping out Sue, such as driving her and her mother to appointments and church. Ed moved back to Toronto permanently in January of this year to be closer to Chris and Sue.Ed was a loving father. He shared his love of nature with Chris, including annual trips to the Rocky Mountains when Chris worked out west. He was happiest surrounded by natural beauty, listening to birdsongs, at peace. He was a dependable and loving member of his family. In 20 years, he never missed an opportunity to spend time with his family. Even when he was living in Hong Kong, Ed would fly home each year to join their annual family vacation. He was always the first of the adults to join the kids in whatever games they were playing. He was an enthusiastic traveller, loved seeing the world, and playing tour guide. Above all, Ed loved sampling all kinds of food. Ed was a helpful, caring friend, intelligent and respected by his peers. He enjoyed the challenges of analysing the stock market. He always believed that everything in this world is defined by certain mathematical formulae. He would happily engage in many heated friendly arguments, especially with his friend Bill. No right or wrong, just having fun arguing.Ed was fortunate to have the love and support of many good friends and family over the years. We will all miss him dearly. May his soul rest in peace. In lieu of flowers, we would like to honour Edward's memory with donations to Nature Conservancy of Canada (https://www.natureconservancy.ca/en/what-you-can-do/donate/), an organization that works to protect Canada's natural heritage for future generations to enjoy. Additionally, we are putting together a larger photo album showcasing Edward's life with many contributions from his friends. The album will be ready by June 7; please contact Sue for details after that date. If you would like to contribute to this album please contact a family member.
