Obituary of Tim Smith
Age 53 years Residence: Oakville, Ontario CanadaDied Saturday May 16, 2020Tim was born in Trenton, New Jersey, Oct 17, 1966 to parents Maurice (Jack) and Joean. Tim was the youngest of four children. At the age of 10 after the passing of his father 3 years earlier, Tim gained Wally as a stepdad and moved to Pennsylvania. The family eventually moved to Oakville, Ontario, Canada in 1976. Tim went to Maple Grove Public School/E.J. James and then on to Oakville Trafalgar High School; where he then decided to attend Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario to play football. Afterwards, he took a year off to hit the slopes of Whistler BC and became what we in Canada fondly refer to as a “Ski Bum.” He had the time of his life before returning to Queen’s to graduate with a Bachelor's Degree in Politics.Tim was a naturally gifted athlete and excelled in pretty much any sport but played a very high level of soccer in his younger years. In 1980 Tim’s Oakville Granada Rep Soccer Team won the Under 14 Canadian National Championship before hanging up his cleats. During and after that there was hockey, rugby, and football, biking through the mountains of Alberta and BC, tennis and many other sports where Tim was often the captain of his team. Because of his talents, Tim had opportunities to continue in athletics, but instead turned his attention to the business world.Tim was one of only two candidates recruited from Queens in the year he graduated to work for Unilever Canada, which took him out to the East Coast where he immensely enjoyed the laid back lifestyle; living in Halifax for the next 3 years and making friends he would keep for a lifetime. Tim eventually took a position back in the Toronto office but truly needed and wanted to feed his incredible entrepreneurial spirit. It was at this juncture where it began and remained throughout the rest of his life with so many different positions and reinventions. But one thing was clear, Tim wanted to work for himself and this led to various exciting adventures which included real estate management, newspaper advertising, sales and publishing. In the past 10 years he continued his pursuits as a mortgage broker and furthered his ongoing interest in various stock trading. If you knew Tim well, you knew he loved research whether a vacation, place to visit or a business idea - if Tim was interested in something he would research it to the nth degree, which was a great quality but drove his wife and friends crazy at times - “it’s Tim on the phone with another idea for a business - so if you’ve got 2 hours of time on your hands sit back and listen!”Tim loved company, and everyone who knew Tim, instantly liked him. This likeability made many friends; most of whom would keep in contact with Tim his entire life.In his 20’s, Tim led an adventurous single life, travelling the country and various parts of the world. Many of Tim’s high school friends remember his multiple adventures during that time.Tim’s single life came to an abrupt stop in 1995, when he fell head over heels in love with his future wife Susan (nee Philpott) who became his lifetime partner, and forever after affectionately known to Tim as “Sus”. Susan recalls being impressed with Tim’s notoriety, when they first met as young adults, when Tim was the only guy hired in a restaurant full of female staff. It would be 8 years later, when their paths crossed again - that the love affair would begin. Sue and Tim proceeded to enter the part of what many refer to as “the greatest time of their lives.” Work and travel brought them to homes on a Caribbean Island, BC’s Rocky Mountains, and then finally back to their hometown of Oakville in 2009. During that time the family that Tim was destined to start - began with Spencer 1999 and then Hunter in 2002.Everyone who knew Tim, knew that Tim absolutely loved his family. Sue and Tim were not only married to each other, but they were each other's best friends. Their main topic was almost always discussing Spencer and Hunter, and how and when to help them with a sport, a challenge, or their next adventure. Hours were spent just talking about politics, places in the world or memories of the many years they had been together. Tim’s idea of a great night was always staying home and being with his family. Tim always had a story that usually left you in laughter. Tim absolutely loved to laugh, and most of Tim’s friends never saw Tim in a bad mood. Tim was always upbeat and uber gregarious. Tim simply did not talk about negative things with his friends and family. In his last few years, only his family knew about his struggles with neuropathy and its immense pain not to mention all of his other issues; this was one that kept him awake at night. No, you may not know about that because Tim preferred to talk about the positive. This is most certainly why Tim had so many lifelong friends. He enjoyed his many friends and always preferred a small gathering of close friends in an intimate surrounding to a large bar scene surrounded by strangers - Tim was always about beautiful surroundings and comfortable spaces with loving and loyal friends and family. Tim is survived by his wife Susan (nee Philpott), sons Spencer and Hunter, and his large extended family. Tim was predeceased by his father Maurice (Jack) in 1974, Stepdad Wally in 2000, and his mother Joean in 2017.Loving brother to Beth Giles, Michele Smith (Wayne), Jacqueline Rooke (Chris), Stepbrother to Sandee, Robin, John, Collin and Kimberley and nephew of Vincent Roney and his wife Millie. Loving Uncle to his many nephews and niecesTim did not designate a memorial fund, or charity. Those who knew Tim would know that he would prefer if you would in the coming years ahead - drop by and visit Susan, or call and say hi to Spencer, and Hunter. Spending time with Tim’s favourite people would please Tim immensely and honor his friendship, and memory. There will be a Celebration of Life.
