Obituary of Gordon Fairlie Polson
Gordon, age 90, passed away surrounded by family at Southlake Village. He has now gone home to be with our Lord and is re-united with his beautiful wife of 63 years Connie, (Mary Constance) who died in 2017. Born and educated in Scotland, Gordon graduated with a Bachelor of Architecture degree and held a silver medal from the Royal Institute of British Architects. He then moved to Canada and practised architecture across the country for over forty years before retiring in 1994. He was design partner for two Ontario architectural practices and worked as Chief architect for Bank of Montreal, Petro-Canada, managing their Design and Construction departments and for Royal LePage. He has lived in Toronto, Montreal, Morrisburg/Cornwall, Calgary, Markham and Newmarket. Following retirement, Gordon turned his eye for design towards creating works of art. He would paint beautiful canvasses using oil and in particular, watercolour mediums. His work, exhibited in a few select Ontario galleries, featured Canadian landscapes, sailboat scenes, of course architecture, and street scenes of Markham Historical Village and Unionville. Gordon enjoyed being a part of a local artist community and seeing the beauty in his surroundings. A man of faith, he was also committed to his local Presbyterian church whether it was St. Giles in Baie D’Urfe Quebec, St. Mark’s in Don Mills, St. Andrew’s in Calgary and also St. Andrews in Markham. He served as an elder and enjoyed taking part in the men's ministries. He also served with the Boys Scouts of Canada as an executive council member in Quebec. Other passions of Gordon’s included sailing out of the Pointe Claire Yacht Club in Montreal, and along the St. Lawrence River when he lived in Morrisburg. His Scottish heritage (born in Stevenston, Ayrshire) was always at the forefront of his family ties and he loved British humour and a good Scotch to celebrate any occasion. A close second were his outings to the local pub for fries and a pint of beer. Gordon was always proud of his family and is lovingly remembered by his children, Carolyn Bowes (Greg), Alasdair Polson (Luranah), Valerie Romanzin (Gerald), and Irene Lough (Michael). Loving grandfather to Tristan and Jacqueline Hodd; Cameron, Duncan (Danielle) and Lachlan (Olivia) Polson; Quinn, Garrett and Metea Romanzin; Meighan and Graham Lough. He is also survived by his step-grandchildren Adam, Jennifer (Andrei), Emily and Sarah, and by his two great grandsons, Iver and Avery. Gordon was predeceased by his brothers, Ian (age 4) and Alasdair (age 19), and his parents, John S.G. and Elizabeth (Bessie McDonald Hamilton) Polson. The family would like to thank the staff of Southlake Village for their thoughtful care and support. A graveside service for immediate family will take place on Monday, April 27th at 2:00 pm.
