Obituary of Maria Canci

CANCI, Maria (nee Dicembre)April 14, 1934 – April 23, 2020It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother and grandmother. She left us peacefully after a long struggle with Dementia on April 23, 2020. She was the loving wife of the late Giovanni, devoted mother to Marisa (Salvatore Iacono) and Nick (Wendy) and treasured grandmother “Nonna Ma” to Elena (Sam D’Angelo), Marco, Yuri (Christina), Ciana and Giani. She leaves us with very heavy hearts but we are comforted by the fond and abundant memories she gave us and the special moments we shared with her.She is predeceased by her parents, Michele and Teodora Dicembre and her in-laws Nicola Canci and Maria Menna, her brothers Giovanni, Nicola and Giuseppe and her sister-in-law Anna Gumari.She will be missed by her sisters Antonietta (Guerrino D’Adderio) and Nicoletta (Edmondo Inconditi), her brother Luigi (Beatrice) and her sister-in-laws Carmina (late Angelo Falcucci), Grazia (late Vincenzo Piscicelli) and Michelina (late Donato DiTullio) and her sister-in-laws Dora Dicembre and Denise Kingsbury and brother-in-law Antonio Gumari. She will be lovingly remembered and missed by her many nieces and nephews and friends in Canada and Italy. Maria left Italy in February 1956 to come to Canada to join her older brothers Giovanni and Nicola and then began her new life in Canada with her husband in November 1956. Together, they worked very hard and helped build a better and promising future for their children Marisa and Nick and grandchildren. The family extends deep-felt thanks and gratitude to all the staff, who are too many to name individually, in the Long Term Gentle Care Unit at Villa Marconi for their loving devotion and exceptional care for Maria for the past four years. A very special thank you is extended to Sarah, Sanjita and Anna for the special Facetime moments that they provided to Marisa and Sal so compassionately a few hours before Maria passed away.Due to the current physical distancing regulations, a Private Roman Catholic Funeral Service for family members only, followed by Entombment in the Padre Pio Mausoleum will be held at Capital Funeral Home & Cemetery on Monday April 27, 2020, the seventh anniversary of her beloved Giovanni’s passing - due to guidelines and restrictions relating to COVID-19 there is a 10 person maximum limit allowed in the building. Please be prepared to wait outside. We thank you for your understanding. A Memorial Service for all family and friends will be held in Maria’s honour when the situation allows.Donations in Maria’s memory would be appreciated and may be made to Villa Marconi in Ottawa and/or The Dementia Society of Ottawa.
