Obituary of Christopher Simon
The Lord unexpectedly called Christopher F. Simon home in a peaceful manner from his home in Oakville, Ontario on April 12, 2020 in his 87th year. Chris was born November 26, 1932 in Woodbury, New Jersey. His life was well lived, and he was well loved. This kind, loving, caring and wonderful man left an indelible mark on those whose lives he touched, and he will be forever missed by his wife Grace (Liaudat) and his children Martin (Jennifer) and Steven (Robin). Proud ‘Grandpa Chris’ to Bradley, Brett, and Leah. Beloved brother of John (Constance), Caroline Humphrey and James (Lisa). Pre-deceased by his parents, Walter and Frances (Dowdy). He leaves behind many beloved relatives. Family was the essence of Chris’s life. He cherished equally the roles of brother, father, grandfather, uncle, and great-uncle and he has been a tremendous positive presence in the lives of his children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Growing up during the time of the Great Depression and the war years, he moved with his family to twelve different communities in the United States before he graduated high school at Amherst Central High School in Buffalo, New York. Chris was a proud Eagle Scout, an honor he attained before his fifteenth birthday, and member of the Sigma Chi International Fraternity. He also served in the United States Army from 1955 to 1957 in both the United States and West Germany before graduating from the University of Delaware. Chris then embarked on his business career where he worked for RCA, Control Data, Computer Learning, DuPont and Nova Corporation before retiring in 1994, in part, to care for his mother. His business career took him around the United States and to Argentina (where he met Grace) and Canada, first to Montreal and then to Oakville in 1978. He was a member of the Oakville Club and an active boater for many years in the Chesapeake Bay and Lake Ontario. Chris was also a Commodore of the Elk River Yacht club, where he was a proud member for over fifty years. While was caring for his mother, Chris took on the role of host at the family home in Fort Lauderdale, Florida where he became the hub of the extended family, joyfully welcoming one and all. He was a proud uncle to Cathy (Meacham), Larry (Danielle), Philip (Lindsay), Karen, Chris (Laura), Jeff (Allison), John (Jennifer), and Edward. Cherished great-uncle to Arwyn, Misha, Taylor, Calyx, Field, Leah, Jackson, Connor, Christopher, Alexandra, Abigail, Charlotte, and Hudson. We were saddened to hear of Chris’s sudden passing and extend our condolences to his family. We were neighbours and when we occasionally met outside, he always had kind words to say. Reading the tributes, we have learned more about him and it’s evident how much he cared for his family.

After a week, the shock has receded a little. I will always appreciate Chris for stepping up for my sister, Karen, and me after our parents got divorced when we were little. I still remember when he gave me my first pair of waterskis when I was 5, possibly because I had gotten too big to take waterskiing on his shoulders anymore. My son still has the skis. Chris invited us down to live with him in Argentina for 5 months so I had a third grade "semester abroad." I took the overnight train from Wilmington to Montreal to visit him, Grace and the boys, although I'm not sure who thought it was a good idea to have a 14 year old by himself with no ID try to cross an international border; for a minute I thought they were going to put me out of the train on the Vermont/Quebec border in the middle of nowhere but I guess the 70s were a little more mellow. Chris was certainly the exception to the alleged-Ben Franklin saying that you shouldn't stay with a relative for more than 3 days; you could stay with him the whole week and leave happier than when you got there. That may be the best compliment that I can give. Nothing is ever the same and we will survive, but this is truly a loss.
