Obituary of George Iliopoulos
July 20, 1947 – Apr 6, 2020It is with very heavy hearts that we regret to announce the passing of our beloved George Iliopoulos. All of us who were blessed enough to know George in this life knew how wonderful a person he was. The kindness and generosity of his heart touched everyone he was connected to in this world and he made every community he belonged to stronger and was an irreplaceable pillar of strength and support in our family. George was a devoted husband, father and grandfather whose love for his wife Christina, his son Nick, daughters Sophie and Georgia, granddaughter Odessa, and son-in-laws Paul and Jean-Sebastien were infinite and boundless. His brother John, and sisters Angela and Christina were very close to his heart, together they built their families and lives in Canada from humble beginnings in Greece through unwavering support and love for each other. He loved their children and grandchildren, as deeply as you could expect any uncle and granduncle could. The vastness and reach of George’s heart and passion stretched so far and touched so many people in the short time he was with us. He had very strong friendships with members of his extended family, with his work family, with the hunting and trapshooting communities which were both like family to him as well. George was a very passionate person with a fierce competitive fire inside him, and he was very proud of his many achievements over the years in trapshooting competition. He held leadership positions in various organizations over the years, Artemis, Hamilton Gun Club, OPTA (Ontario Provincial Trapshooting Association), and that was a testament to how important these communities were to him and how much he cared about his friends. There is a unique word in Greek, “Philotimo”, that translates to “Love of honour”, but in it’s proper context it means much more: it means loving your friend with honour. George Iliopoulos embodied the word Philotimo in his life. He was loved dearly and will be missed dearly by all who knew him. May God rest his soul in peace and may He give us the strength to bear the sudden loss of such a wonderful man.In lieu of flowers, please donate to the SickKids Foundation. This pertains to the entire funeral home.My March 28 directive had placed the limit at 10 at each funeral or visitation. We now must make this more stringent in order to protect families and funeral home staff. Remember, if only one of your staff members comes down with COVID-19, your funeral home could be closed for two weeks or longer. We need you all open during this very hard time. The funeral home must be large enough for people to maintain physical distancing of at least two metres (six feet) apart from each other at all times, to a maximum of 10 people — in the entire funeral home establishment at one time.Even if you have unlimited space, or are outside, the maximum is 10. The number does not include funeral home staff.Focus on accommodating as few people as possible. The goal is safety for all families and all funeral home staff. Note, that if you advertise a funeral, visitation or gathering in any medium you must state this limitation or link to this directive.Follow this law strictly.Thank you all for the professional and caring work you do for Ontario families every day.Stay vigilant. We are ready…together with you to provide the best, safe bereavement services to Ontario families. This directive is made pursuant to an Emergency Order under the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act.-Carey Smith, CEO/Registrar, BAOhttps://mailchi.mp/20eff0aa3ef8/registrars-directive-10-max-in-the-entire-funeral-home-at-one-time?e=ad6dc26ec0
