Obituary of Laurie Silvera

Cecil Lawrence “Laurie” Silvera passed away peacefully at 89, in the Milton District Hospital on March 2nd, 2020. Laurie was born July 7th, 1930 in St. Mary, Jamaica. His father, Owen Silvera and his mother Angele Silvera, née Penaydo helped pave the way to what would soon be Laurie’s passionate and successful future in horse training.Laurie began his career in Jamaica, where horse racing was considered the sport of Kings, and Laurie Silvera was nothing less than a king to all who knew him. His career continued when he moved to Canada with his family in 1974 where he went on to win three consecutive Green Wood Spring titles between 1989 and 1991. With over 1000 career wins in Canada, and a record breaking 500 wins in Jamaica, Laurie will be remembered as a man who did not slow down for anything.Laurie Silvera commanded the attention of the room with his presence alone, and his voice was one that cracked like a whip, bringing all chatter to silence. His Woodbine family would remember him for his sharp mind and his ten gallon Stetson hat, and his loved ones will remember him for his humour and his loving heart. With his larger than life personality, and his many accolades throughout his career, Laurie will be known as a legend in his field, and as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather by his family.Laurie leaves behind his wife, Claudia Silvera née Lacy (Miss Lace), with whom he shared a long and loving marriage with for 66 years. Laurie met his wife Claudia as a teenager, where he swept her off her feet, despite any protest of curfew from their parents. Laurie and Claudia’s devotion to one another transcended all of life’s hills and valleys, and remains untested to this day.He is remembered by his siblings Peggy, Carmen, Shelagh (deceased) and Michael (Buddy). His daughters Claudette (Carl), Peta-Gaye (Pierre), Catherine (Dave), Bridget (Luther), and his sons Micheal and Arthur all hold Laurie in their hearts, and cherish their memories with him. His family would like to acknowledge the efforts of Dr. Makar, Dr. Anderson, Dr. Wong, Dr. McFadden, Dr. Tawadross, all the nurses, and the Acclaim health team who worked tirelessly to see that he lived a long and full life.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Milton District Hospital. Please leave a message of condolence for the family in our online guestbook.
