Obituary of John Khik Goan Tan

With great sadness we announce the passing of John Khik Goan Tan. John died on 20 January 2020 in Puerto Rico while on holiday. He was 82 years old. He will be sadly missed by his children: Hong Liat and Su Fei, his grandchildren: Jonathan and Joseph and great-grandchild: Carmelita, his TaeKwonDo community and his wider family and friends. John was born in Semarang, Indonesia, the second of five siblings. He attended high school and college in Sydney Australia and moved to Rhenen in the Netherlands to join his father and mother. He married Susan Ferraro in the Netherlands and had two children., Su Fei and Hong Liat. The family immigrated to Canada in 1974. John married Jenny Van der Burg in 1994 and they were happily married until 2009 when Jenny died of cancer. He met Judy Davies in 2010 his good friend and travelling companion until his death in 2020. John was a dedicated and loyal employee to Mother Parkers in Mississauga. On his retirement from Mother Parkers his colleagues described John as “one man respected appreciated and loved by his friends, family and co-workers, a balanced blend of strength, passion, fairness and loyalty. Full of many wonderful years of friendship and memories. Good luck John we will miss you.” John was a very active and well loved member of the Tae Kwon Do community. John was also passionate about skiing and he and his family enjoyed many holidays together skiing and enjoying time together on the slopes. John’s memorial service will be held at Glen Oaks Funeral home on Thursday 5 March 2020. There will be a service from 6 pm followed by a reception. Donations to the Humane Society, would be appreciated in lieu of flowers.
