Obituary of Noel Archer
Noel Archer, affectionately known as “Uncle Nowie” was the 6th of 9 children born to Jeremiah and Elmore Archer on February 26, 1934 in White Hall, St. Ann, Jamaica. A lifelong Christian, He grew up in Jeffery Town, St. Mary and attended Jeffery Town Primary School. He was an excellent student with a brilliant mind. He excelled in mathematics and his meticulous attention to detail made him a jack of all trades. He was a true entrepreneur and one of the first people in his district to learn to read blue prints. His first investment was purchasing a new truck to transport bananas from the countryside to shipping wharfs. He also transported farmers from rural areas to large cities so they could sell their produce. It was during one of these routine trips that Noel met Ivy and fell in love. When Ivy moved to Canada, Noel followed and the happy couple bought a home and settled in Etobicoke to raise their children. In Canada, Noel put his skills and entrepreneurship to good use by starting a construction business with his brother Desmond. When Desmond passed away, Noel joined the York Region District School Board as a carpenter and cabinet maker.Noel and Ivy made a great team. They worked hard and shared many happy memories. In the early 90’s Noel was diagnosed with a brain tumour and despite a dangerous surgery and suffering a stroke right after, he made a miraculous recovery and returned to work. His strength and perseverance were inspirational to all.Unfortunately, tragedy struck again after Noel’s retirement. He was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Despite the emotional and physical demands, Ivy insisted on caring for him at home. For 15 years she dedicated her life to making sure Noel was comfortable, well fed and content. Her resiliency and unrelenting love never faltered, even on the darkest days. Ivy’s dedication and generosity astounded the doctors who cared for Noel. His last doctor remarked: “I have spent 37 years in this business, seen thousands of patients, and I have never seen a spouse as dedicated to the care of a mate, as Ivy is to Noel, she gets a triple A+++ as a wife and caregiver.”Noel peacefully passed away at home on February 22, 2020 at 9 am surrounded by his loving family. He will be dearly missed and forever live on in our hearts. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Ivy (nee Adamson), his son Vincent, his daughters, Donna, Sharon and Carol, a sister, three brothers, seven grandchildren, a great grandson and many nieces and nephews.Rest in peace Noel, our beloved.
