Obituary of Maria Hortensia Sommer

Our mother Maria Hortensia passed away peacefully on Monday, December 30, 2019. She will be greatly missed by her daughters Alicia and Sofie, Kristine her beloved granddaughter and her husband Brad, Mark her son in law.She will be missed by the amazing staff at Cardinal Ambrozic Houses of Providence. We are all thankful for the amazing care, support and friendship that the staff at Providence provided mom and our family. A special callout goes out to the nursing team, doctors, the personal support workers, the clergy, the activation leaders, the physiotherapists, social workers and management. You enriched her life so much.Born in Negritos, Peru to Edita Gomez and Felix Ramirez. Maria had six brothers and sisters. As a young girl she was an elite athlete playing volleyball for the national team and competing in Track and Fields events. After emigrating to Canada with her husband Hermann and two young daughters, she loved life as a Canadian enjoying the snow and the culture.Maria embraced the simple gifts of life. Family, friends, cooking, sewing, drinking good wine and nature. Mom`s most favorite place was her garden at her house. There are mature apple, pear and cherry trees in her garden that she started from seed along with hydrangeas, rose of sharon, roses, campanulas and forget-me-nots to name a few. Her legacy will live on in her garden.Maria gave of herself to all and left the world a better place.
