Edith Madge (McFadden) Bales 1921-2019Peacefully, on December 18, 2019, predeceased by her parents John N McFadden and Madge Isabel Poole of Manitoba. Edith joins her loving husband Robert (Bob) Bales (1915-1997), her amazing daughter Linda Margaret Savage (1947-2002) and her favourite dogs, Christie and Willie. She is survived by her children Robert (Cynthia), John (Penny Werthner), Ross (Marg McGregor) and son-in-law Richard Savage, and grandchildren: Sarah (Eric), Michael (Kim), David (Joanne), Janis (James), Neill, Elena, Kaleigh, Kristy, Emily (Mark), Christopher (Jen), Gillian (Russ), and 12 great-grandchildren.Edith was born in Dauphin Manitoba and graduated with a B.A. from Brandon University in 1942. That year, she met Bob in Dauphin on a blind date when he was stationed at No.7 BGS, Paulson for training in the Air Force. When Bob was transferred to Montreal, she followed and worked with the Canadian Pacific Railroad while he was overseas until 1945. They were married three weeks after his return, in July 1945. They raised their children in Lachine (Quebec) and moved to Ottawa in 1965 where Bob worked with the National Research Council. They became involved in their new community and made lifelong friends at the church, the Rideau Canoe Club and in the neighbourhood. Edith took great pleasure in her children and grandchildren. She was a very kind and happy person, always smiling and laughing at her children’s jokes. The family would like to extend thanks to the staff at the Waterford Retirement Residence, especially the dedicated workers in the memory unit where Edith spent her last few years. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make a donation to the Arthritis Society or the charity of their choice. Friends are welcome to share in a celebration of Edith’s life to be held Monday December 23rd at 11:00am, at the Riverside United Church, 3191 Riverside Drive, Ottawa, ON. K1V 8N8
