Lester Virn “Les” DeFoe of Eugene died Sept. 8 of age-related causes. He was 92. A graveside service is planned at a later date at Roseburg National Cemetery.He was born April 12, 1920, in Bend to Jay and Juanita Whitaker DeFoe. He married Margaret Lindley on April 25, 1964, in Carson City, Nev.He enlisted in the U.S. Army at age 17 and re-enlisted in the Air Force. He retired as a master sergeant. He was a POW for 3½ years during World War II, and was a survivor of the Bataan Death March. He was awarded a Silver Star, POW Medal and a Purple Heart. He worked in hotel management.Survivors include his wife; a sister, Mary Vacchiery of Mercer Island, Wash.; and five grandchildren. A son, Michael Lindley, died previously.Arrangements by Musgrove’s at Lane Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home in Eugene. Remembrances to Jasper Mountain.
