Obituary of Alice bates

SPRINGFIELD — The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, at Springfield Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home for Alice Mae Bates of Springfield, who died Sept. 15 of age-related causes. She was 89. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.She was born May 9, 1923, in Zap, N.D., to Andrew and Mary Wegerle Bertsch. She married Sherrill B. Bates on April 24, 1942, in Olympia, Wash. He died previously.She attended school through the ninth grade. She worked for Boeing Riveter during World War II. She worked as a nanny, a meat packer, a waitress, a manager of motel maids and as a homemaker.Survivors include two sons, Kelly of Springfield and Vernon of Portland; a daughter, Sherry Smith of Springfield; two brothers, Gordon Bertsch of North Dakota and Christ Bertsch of Tacoma; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. A daughter, Kathe Farson, died previously.Burial will be at 3 p.m., Thursday at Springfield Memorial Gardens. Arrangements by Musgrove’s at Springfield Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home in Springfield.
