Obituary of Vern Angst
On December 20, 2012 Our Beloved Husband, Father and Grandfather LaVerne "Vern" Stanley Angst peacefully passed away from complications from cancer at his home in Eugene, Oregon surrounded by his family. He was born on October 14, 1925 to Roland and Lucile Angst in Roseburg, OR. In 1944 LaVerne enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps and was assigned to the 8th Air Force B-17 Aircraft Squadron which flew over Europe during World War II. Our father was awarded the Air Medal and also the Distinguished Flying Cross Oak Leaf Cluster five times in support of heroism and extraordinary participation of Thirty-Five B-17 Aircraft aerial missions as a ball turret gunner. On June 20, 1948 he married Dorothy Ann Thorssell of Portland, OR. In 1948 following in his father's footsteps he took over the operation of R. L. Angst & Son, a petroleum distributorship for Exxon Mobil Oil Company in Eugene, OR. In 1949 they welcomed their first of four children to the world, a son named Steven LaVerne. Steven passed away at the age of four days old. In 1952 Linda Jean was born followed by Michael LaVerne in 1953 and Debra Ann in 1956. In addition to his wife LaVerne is survived by his sister Dona Jean Langley and niece Sara Harris, children Linda and son in law Roger Thies, Michael and daughter in law Helen and Debra Dyson. Son in law James Dyson passed away October 19, 2009. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Ashley Bridges (Thies) and her husband Taylor Bridges, Michelle and Michael Angst and step-grandchildren Andrew Thies and Meredith Coelho. LaVerne was a 50 plus year member of the Shriners, Masons and Scottish Rite. He was also a member of the Elks Lodge in Eugene, OR. Memorial contributions can be made to the Shriners Hospital at 3101 SW Sam Jackson Park Road, Portland, OR 97239. A memorial service will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church at 440 Maxwell Road, Eugene, OR on Sunday January 13th, 2013 at 2:00pm.
