Obituary of Betty Fryefield
Betty Jean Fryefield passed away on August 3, 2013, after a comparatively short illness. She was born November 14, 1928, to Andrew David Kidd and Jean Kelvie (Latta) Kidd in Long Beach, California.Betty Jean had one special memory: she was a survivor of the Long Beach earthquake of 1933. Although she was not injured, her apartment building was severely damaged and the family had to live in a tent for more than a month.Betty Jean graduated from Jordan High School in Long Beach in 1946. She went on to earn a BA at Occidental College in Eagle Rock, California, with a teaching credential from Long Beach State University. She married Sam Fryefield on March 23, 1952, in the North Long Beach Community Presbyterian Church. She was a member of that church from 1940 until 2006.As Sam was a surveyor with the California Division of Beaches and Parks, they spent their first two years of marriage traveling and living in a 21-foot trailer from one end of California to the other. Needing a bit more living space and a place to raise a family, they settled down in Lakewood, California, where they lived for 51 years. Betty Jean and Sam moved to Eugene in 2006 in order to be close to their son and family. Their last move was in March 2012 to Cascade Manor where her pleasant personality immediately brought her a host of wonderful friends.Betty Jean is survived by her husband of 61 years; son David Fryefield and daughter-in-law Catherine Kordesch of Eugene; granddaughters Chris, Jean Fleming, and Karen; cousins, Dora Ellen Nelson, Roberta Mansfield, and James Kidd, all of the Portland area; and a step-son, Paul Fleming of Australia.A private burial service will be held August 11, 2013.
